You've probably heard how sensational the
2006 Brunello di Montalcino vintage is in Italy. With so many releases
receiving extremely high scores, it parallels the great 2007 vintage in Napa
Valley and in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Below are excerpts from articles
written by professional wine critics and publications regarding this benchmark
vintage.
James Suckling, former Senior Editor of Wine Spectator Magazine, recently wrote
a large article on the 2006 Brunello di Montalcinos after his visit
there. He tasted and rated many different wines and summarized this
phenomenal vintage as a whole:
"I am very excited about the vintage.
The wines are subtle, yet rich, structured, and powerful. This vintage is
the new benchmark for the region - a modern 1997.... I have spoken to a
number of the top Brunello producers in Montalcino, and they deem the 2006
their best ever... They change all the time in the glass,
from being very aromatic and clean and almost timid, to full, rich and tannic.
They are fascinating to taste. They are some of the most interesting young
Brunellos I have ever tasted since I first started going to Montalcino in
1983."
Wine Spectator Magazine rated this
vintage very highly and had similar feedback:
Region: Tuscany
Grade: A
Score: 93-96
Points
- Complex and powerful wines that impress with ripe yet fresh fruit and firm
yet silky tannins.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has also
recently posted an article that reports this vintage as a benchmark for
Brunello:

Clothes or Historic Vintage?

"Interest in the 2006
Brunello vintage is by far the highest I have seen for any Italian wine since I
joined The Wine Advocate, coincidentally that same year. Many of the 2006s were
highly promising from the moment I began following them in barrel. Now that the
wines are in bottle, it is clear most producers captured the full potential of
this great harvest. While a sizeable number of the top wines are truly
stunning, the vintage's quality is best judged by looking at the second and
third-tier producers, many of whom made wines that are above their historical
standard. At its best, though, 2006 is a benchmark vintage for Brunello di
Montalcino. Readers will not want to miss these fabulous wines."
