Notes From The Winemaker:

Winemaker: Roberto Cipresso, partner and winemaker of Achaval-Ferrer. Roberto is considered on of the most talented young Italian enologists by the specialized press

Grape Variety: Old-vine Malbec, planted on its own roots, from the La Consulta region of the Uco Valley, Mendoza. Total area of the vineyard: 14 acres. Altitude: 3400 feet (1050 mts) above sea level. The great age (more than 80 years) of the plants balances the crop at the extremely low yield of less than one pound of grapes per plant. (1/3 of a bottle of wine) This is equivalent to 0.75 tons per acre, or 12 hectoliters per hectare.

Production notes: With Finca Altamira our goal is to allow the vineyard to express its “terroir”. Malbec is the flagship red variety from Argentina. It has found in Mendoza its true home. We work as hard as necessary during eleven months in the vineyard, to produce grapes that will need very little intervention during the winemaking process. The climate, the viticultural program, the irrigation management: Everything is thought as a step towards the goal of true expression of the vineyard. Finca Altamira´s personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature. Fermentation took place in a small tank. At dryness, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it was then aged for 15 months.

Wine Notes & Recommendations

Grape Varieties
Malbec.

Appellation
Mendoza, Argentina.

Bottling: On August 18th, 2010 unfined and unfiltered.
All our wines are bottled without fining or filtering. There is additional risk in this, but we prefer not to stripe the wine of subtle flavors and aromas. The formation of deposits in the bottle will be noticeable after some cellaring time. This is no way affects quality. We strongly recommend decanting this wine at least an hour before drinking.

Serving Temperature:
Serve between 60 and 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

Decanting
At least an hour before drinking.

Ratings & Reviews

99 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Even better is the brooding 2009 Finca Altamira sourced from vines over 80 years of age with yields of 0.75 tons per acre. Purple/black in color with a spectacular aromatic array of black fruits and spices that jump from the glass, this rich, opulent, beautifully proportioned Malbec sets the bar for what can be achieved with old vines, low yields, and craftsmanship in the cellar." - Jay Miller (Dec 2011)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A dark, powerful red that has cut and grace to its core of vibrant boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry notes. There's a well of acidity that pushes the fruit through hints of flint, violet and spice to the long, berry-filled finish. Malbec. Drink now through 2016. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 300 cases imported." –JM (Oct 31, 2011)

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('08 Vintage):
"The 2008 Finca Altamira is a bit broader and richer on the palate. It is an opulent wine that combines elegance with power. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2028.

Achaval Ferrer is now firmly established as one of Argentina’s benchmark producers." - Jay Miller (12/2010)

94 Points -
Wine Spectator Magazine ('08 Vintage):
"Dark but nicely driven, with lush blueberry and fig sauce notes carried by broad spice and anise flavors. Long and lush through the graphite-filled finish, without the raisined edge of the vintage just pure fruit that sails on. Really stretches out in the glass. Very impressive. Drink now through 2015. 825 cases made." –JM (10/15/2010)

93+ Points -
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ('08 Vintage):
"Bright, saturated ruby. Extremely primary aromas of cassis, black cherry, minerals, menthol, licorice and graphite, plus a whiff of leather. Boasts a penetrating mineral firmness but comes across as denser and lusher than the Quimera, with superb purity and verve to its cassis and chocolatey oak flavors. Very young and powerful wine but the most pliant and fine of this trio, all of which spent 15 months in all-new French oak. Saturates and perfumes the entire mouth with leaving any impression of weight. Very long and subtle on the aftertaste. This should evolve in bottle for many years." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '11)

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine ('08 Vintage):
"From the La Consulta subzone of Mendoza, Altamira is a high-acid Malbec with floral, exotic aromas as well as vivid berry-fruit scents. The palate shows plenty of acidity, and thus the blackberry and blueberry flavors are tangy and borderline tart. Will age well but will never be a lush Malbec. Drink now through 2016." W.E.  (5/1/2011)

94-97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('07 Vintage):
"The 2007 Finca Altamira should prove to be as good as the 2006, perhaps better. It already offers remarkable complexity in its alluring bouquet, layers of ripe fruit, savory flavors, and great length." - Jay Miller (12/2008)

95 Points -
Wine Spectator Magazine ('07 Vintage):
"Gorgeous aromas of crushed plum and fig lead the way for this very dense but remarkably supple offering, loaded with additional blackberry and boysenberry fruit, all laid over Turkish coffee, violet, pastis, licorice and charred mesquite notes. This has a long, long finish. Best from 2010 through 2016. 728 cases made." –JM (7/31/2009)
