Notes From The Winemaker:

Winemaker: Roberto Cipresso, partner and winemaker of Achaval-Ferrer. Roberto is considered on of the most talented young Italian enologists by the specialized press.

Production: 823 cases x 12 bottles.

Grape Variety: 13 acres of old vine Malbec in Medrano, Mendoza, at an altitude of 2,400 feet (700 mts), on the west bank of the Tunuyan river. The vines were planted in 1921 on their own roots. Yield per plant was less than one pound of grapes. (1/3 of a bottle of wine) This is equivalent to 0.9 tons per acre, or 14 hectoliters per hectare.

Harvest: Manual, on March 9th, 2009.

Best drinking period: After 2012 and beyond 2022.

Production notes: With Finca Mirador our goal is to allow the vineyard to express its “terroir”. Malbec is the flagship red variety from Argentina. It has found in Mendoza its true home. We work as hard as necessary during eleven months in the vineyard, to produce grapes that will need very little intervention during the winemaking process. The climate, the viticulturural program, the irrigation management: Everything is thought as a step towards the goal of true expression of the vineyard. Finca Mirador´s personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature. Fermentation took place in a small tank. At dryness, the wine was pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it was then aged for 15 months.

Bottling: On August 9th 2010, unfined and unfiltered.
All our wines are bottled without fining or filtering. There is additional risk in this, but we prefer not to stripe the wine of subtle flavors and aromas. The formation of deposits in the bottle will be noticeable after some cellaring time. This is no way affects quality. We strongly recommend decanting this wine at least an hour before drinking.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Finca Mirador was sourced from vines planted in 1921 and yields of 0.9 tons per acre. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports a captivating nose of sandalwood, exotic spices, espresso, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Layered on the palate with a velvety texture, it conceals enough structure to evolve for at least 3-4 years. This nicely proportioned effort will deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2029." - Jay Miller (Dec 2011)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Aromas and flavors of fresh crushed raspberry, blackberry, violet and graphite expand on the palate, which remains fresh and focused as medium tannins add support to the finish. Malbec. Drink now through 2016. 300 cases imported." –NW (Oct 31, 2011)

96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2008 Vintage):
"The 2008 Finca Mirador offers up a kinky nose of wild berries, brier, underbrush, and exotic spices. Already complex with superb depth and intense flavors, this is an exceptionally lengthy offering that will benefit from 3-4 years of additional bottle aging and should be at its best from 2013 to 2023." - Jay Miller (Dec 2010)

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 Vintage):
"Superrich and still quite tight, displaying a strong charcoal and graphite spine that holds the core of dense plum skin, anise, blackberry and Black Forest cake at bay. The long, grippy finish lets Turkish coffee and licorice notes flesh out. Best from 2011 through 2015. 843 cases made." –JM (Oct 15, 2010)

91+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 Vintage):
"Saturated medium ruby. Deeper in pitch than the Altamira, with blackberry, cassis, black cherry and mint aromas complemented by strong smoky, meaty soil tones. Ripe and large-scaled but extremely closed today, not yet showing the inner-mouth perfume of the Altamira Strong acidity and big, broad tannins saturate the palate of this very firmly structured, ageworthy malbec." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '11)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 Vintage):
"The 2007 Finca Mirador was sourced from a 13-acre parcel in Medrano planted in 1921. The yields for this wine were 0.9 tons per acre with the wine aged for 15 months in new French oak. Purple-colored with a superb display of toasty new oak, lilacs, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry, on the palate it sports an elegant personality, savory flavors, underlying structure, and a lengthy, 45-second finish. It, too, will drink well from 2013 to 2022.

Achaval Ferrer makes my short list of Argentina’s top producers of Malbec. My longevity estimates are conservative because these wines have no track record; my experience with wines this impeccably balanced and rich is that they will continue on for 25 years and more. Let’s hope purchasers can muster the patience to cellar some of these wines for the requisite time. I was also shown barrel samples of Achaval Ferrer’s 2008s. They look to be equally promising." - Jay Miller (Aug 2009)

94 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 Vintage):
"Intriguing, with a piercing violet and mineral entry backed by superracy acidity that lets the crushed blueberry, plum and blackberry fruit stretch out on the very long, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2010 through 2015. 1,000 cases made." –JM (Jul 31, 2009)

92+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2007 Vintage):
"Good full ruby. Deeper and wilder on the nose than the Altamira, offering soil-driven notes of blackberry, licorice and violet. Dense and sweet but light on its feet, with a strong floral character and bright acidity cutting through the wine's density of texture. Finishes with a tannic spine that calls for patience." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb 10)
