Winemaker Notes:

The grapes were sourced from our Estate and from neighboring York Creek, Crowley and Spring Mountain Vineyards. Each Vineyard block was fermented and aged separately for 12 months then blended followed by further aging. This wine was aged for a total of 22 months in French oak barrels with 65% new. The small additions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (3% each) brought up the spice and perfume in the nose and gave the wine a little more backbone and fuller color.

Tasting Notes:

Rich purple in its youth, the wines nose is full of fresh blackberries and ripe pomegranate. There are also aromatics of black pepper, mint and crushed flowers. The weight of the wine is very lush with ripe cassis and fennel on the mid-pallet. The tannins are chalky and well rounded with some bright mountain acidity to complement them. The finish is long and of creamed coffee. This year the wine is much more approachable in its youth, but the wine will age gracefully over the next 8-10 years (2009-2017).

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (for 2007):
"A big, bold and beautiful Cabernet. Will appeal to those who like the California style, although Bordeauxphiles will find it too ripe and fruity. Brims with blackberries, black cherries, currants, licorice and sweet toasted oak, wrapped into firm, mountain tannins. Now–2014." S.H. (6/1/2010)

91+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
(for 2007):
"A beauty, the deep, full-bodied 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain exhibits notes of blueberry pie, charcoal, wet steel, white flowers, and crushed rocks. Pure and dense, 2-3 years of bottle age is required, and it should keep for two decades.

This Spring Mountain winery has fashioned their finest wines since the early nineties." - Robert Parker (Dec 2009)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (for 2007):
"Firm, ripe, intense and spicy, with dried currant, berry, sage and mineral flavors that are tight, focused and well-structured, ending with an aftertaste of loamy earth. Best from 2011 through 2018. 1,855 cases made." –JL (2010)

90 Points -
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (for 2007):
"Medium ruby-red. Expressive aromas of crushed blackberry, blueberry, tobacco, earth, flowers and chocolatey oak. Juicy, sweet and pliant, with firm acidity framing the mountain berry flavors and providing verve. Not yet complex but high-toned in a positive way and quite young. Finishes with serious but sweet tannins." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '10)
