Tasting Notes:
Medium ruby hued, this wine exhibits notes of red currants sandy, loamy undertones. Medium bodied, spicebox, Christmas fruitcake and herbs. There is a depth and richness that we normally find in this vineyard planted to Dijon clones.
This vintage shows a different side of this vineyard- one of elegance and light – the fruit profile is more one of red fruit than the normal dark fruit that we expect. Still complex and slow to reveal itself as this cuvée always is we are still enjoying watching this wine unwind and open up. Right now it is simply giving us hints of what is to come.
Maturity:
This should be a wine to enjoy over the next 8+ years.
Vineyard Info:
This vineyard lies on a property that we purchased in 1997 expressly to have access to this site. After clearing and preparing the soil we planted this steep south facing 10 acre vineyard to Dijon clones 113, 114, 115, 667 and 777 grafted to Phylloxera-resistant rootstock. This site is similar to our Beaux Frères Vineyard in elevation and its sedimentary soils. It is surrounded on all sides by a forest of graceful fir trees. Our first vintage of Upper Terrace was 2002. This site benefits from the same sustainable farming practiced on the Beaux Frères Vineyard.

94 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Taut and focused, this offers a cascade of cinnamon, clove, cherry, raspberry and guava flavors, coming together harmoniously against refined tannins. The finish glides easily. Lingers and lingers. Drink now through 2019."—H.S. (Aug 3, 2011)
92+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Deep red with a bright rim. Exotically perfumed nose displays an array of dark fruit and floral scents, along with notes of Asian spices, anise and lavender. Shows very good depth and a surprisingly lithe character, with energetic raspberry and cherry flavors and notes of floral pastilles and licorice. A spicy quality adds energy to the long, sweet, silky finish. This is very young still." - Josh

95 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Elegant, refined and beautifully focused, layering its red cherry, black cherry, blueberry and currant fruit into a seamless package without tremendous weight. The finish picks up cream, chalk and distinctly mineral notes, and this just doesn't quit. Harmonious and complex. Drink now through 2020. 900 cases made." –HS (Sep 30, 2010)
