Notes from the Winemaker:
Malleolus is the Latin word for vine, in Spanish Malleolus means Majuelo, which is a word used specifically in Ribera del Duero for vineyard. The grapes used in Malleolus are chosen from vines that are 26 to 76 years old and are planted on clay soil with high gravel content. The grapes were macerated for 28 days and underwent malolactic fermentation in barrique. The wine was aged for 18 months in French Allier oak.
Ratings & Reviews
92+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:"The
2008 Malleolus comes from older vines and spent 18 months in French
oak. It gives up a promising nose of pain grille, mineral, espresso,
violets, and blackberry. This is followed by a tannic, savory offering
with just enough fruit for balance. It will benefit from 2-3 years of
additional cellaring to melt some of the tannins and will drink nicely
through 2023." - Jay Miller (Jun 2011)
92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:"Vivid
ruby. Intense, mineral-accented aromas of red and dark berries,
licorice and cracked pepper. Gains spiciness and florality with air and
shows impressive energy and silky texture. Zesty acidity adds cut to
the finish, which leaves traces of minerals and cracked pepper behind. I
really like this wine's energy." - Josh Raynolds (Nov/Oct '11)
92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):"The
2007 Malleolus is a vineyard selection with vine age ranging from 26-76
years. It was aged for 18 months in French oak. Opaque purple-colored,
it sports an aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box,
black cherry, and blackberry. Supple-textured, elegant yet powerful,
with layers of savory fruit, this lengthy effort will benefit from 4-5
years of cellaring and offer prime drinking from 2014 to 2027." - Jay
Miller (Jun 2010)
92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2007 vintage):"Glass-staining
ruby. Flamboyant aromas of crushed blackberry, cherry cola and dark
chocolate, lifted by minerals. Sweet and sexy, with a fine-grained
texture and superb clarity to its crushed dark berry, violet pastille
and smoky mineral flavors. This boasts terrific clarity and a very long
finish, which leaves notes of candied flowers and peppery spice." - Josh
Raynolds (Nov/Dec '10)
92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):"Muscular
yet elegant, this red is both firm and flavorful, with exuberant
boysenberry and wild strawberry fruit and spicy notes of vanilla,
cinnamon and anise. Balanced, even restrained, but shows depth. Drink
now through 2017. 400 cases imported." –TM (Jun 15, 2010)
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):"The purple-colored 2006 Malleolus was aged for 18 months in French oak. It delivers a complex perfume of cedar, spice box, incense, mineral, and blackberry. This leads to an elegant wine with superior depth and intensity. Layered with tons of savory fruit and well concealed ripe tannin, it will evolve for another 6-8 years and provide optimum drinking from 2016 to 2031.
All of the Bodegas Emilio Moro wines are 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)." - Jay Miller (June 2009)
92 Points & "Editor's Choice" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2006 vintage):"Warm and rich wine, with big black cherry, raspberry, vanilla and cedary aromas. Well-oaked if nothing else, with mixed red fruits, black plum and a ton of vanilla on the palate. Lovely texture and stoutly structured, and the finish is full but soft, with dry spice and even more vanilla. Drink now through 2014. M.S." (4/1/2010)
92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):"Vivid ruby. Exotically perfumed scents of cherry-cola, vanillin oak, Asian spices and dried rose. Lively red berry flavors are complemented by notes of candied flowers, five-spice powder and rooty sassafras, with silky tannins adding support. Suave, focused and pure, with excellent finishing clarity and lingering sweetness." - Josh Raynolds (Sep/Oct '09)
90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2006 vintage):"Fresh and vibrant, this red delivers spicy cherry pie flavors, with smoky and light herbal notes that add complexity. The tannins are well-integrated, and the finish is vibrant. Drink now through 2015. 400 cases imported." –TM (Nov 15, 2009)
