Notes from the Winemaker:
The grapes used in Malleolus de Valderramiro are chosen from a very low-yielding vineyard of an 85-year-old plot called “Valderramiro”. The vines are planted on clay soil with high gravel content and yield 0.70-1 t/acre. The grapes were sorted twice: once in the vineyard and then again on the sorting tables at the winery. After 32 days of
maceration in stainless-steel, the malolactic fermentation takes place in new medium toast American oak barrels, with batonage. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels from several tonneleries and different toast for 18 months.
Ratings & Reviews
96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:"The 2007 Malleolus de Valderramiro is a glass-coating opaque purple. It showcases a superb, sexy bouquet of sandalwood, graphite, Asian spices, incense, black cherry, and blackberry that leaps from the glass. Opulent, already complex with more to come, and super-long in the finish, it offers a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2037." - Jay Miller (Jun 2010)
94 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:"Dark and alluring, this red is rich and polished, with layers of plum, blackberry, fig, chocolate, toast and cola notes over firm but well-integrated tannins, smooth on the palate and fresh on the finish. A modern style, with tenderness and depth. Drink now through 2018. 33 cases imported." –TM (Jun 15, 2010)
93 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:"Inky
purple. A drop-dead, seductive bouquet exudes raspberry, cherry
liqueur, potpourri and vanillin oak spice, with a strong mineral
undercurrent. Dense and tightly wound, offering broad dark fruit flavors
that show a porty element but betray no heat. Shows a decadent
character while retaining vivacity, finishing with outstanding length
and lingering notes of cassis and licorice. This really deserves some
patience. The vines were reportedly planted in 1926." - Josh Raynolds

93 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:"Big and sultry as always, with bacon, smoke, black fruit and a full rack of spices making for a wonderful bouquet. Concentrated and ripped for a 2007, with blackberry, clove, pepper, cinnamon and vanilla flavors. And then comes tobacco and more spice on the finish, which is grabby but understandable because it’s so young. Best from 2012 through 2019." —M.S. (8/1/2010)
