Notes from the Winemaker:

The nose is deep and complex with ripe black fruit, mineral substance and elegant balsamic notes. Strong, disciplined and powerful in the mouth offers a touch creamy, firm tannic structure and a great finish. It is a wine with a race, concentrated, full of nuances to keep or to drink. It is recommended to decant. It expresses the full potential of old vines from the valley of the Duero.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points -Wine Spectator Magazine:
Dense, almost syrupy, this brooding red is powerful and distinctive, offering currant, blackberry, anise, espresso and hoisin flavors, supported by chewy tannins. Yet the finish is spicy and floral, almost delicate. Best from 2012 through 2020. 900 cases imported. –TM

93 Points & "Editor's Choice" -Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
Early on it displays mild heat and jamminess, but with airing everything settles, and ultimately this old-vines Tempranillo from the lauded winemaker Mariano Garcia excels. The palate is rich, minerally and meaty, with slightly syrupy black fruit flavors, molasses and chocolate. Chewy, tannic and pure on the finish, with hints of herbs and lemon peel. Drink now through 2013. M.S.  (5/1/2011)  — 93

91 Points - Robert Parker's
Wine Advocate:
The more serious 2005 Vinas Viejas spent 36 months in French and American oak. It has a similar roasted character but considerably more complexity in its aromas of mineral, damp earth, violets, black cherry, and blueberry. Dense and rich on the palate with excellent depth and loads of savory fruit and with the oak totally integrated, it will evolve for 2-3 years and deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2020.

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
Deep ruby. Powerful, oak-spiced aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and plum jam. Lots of dark fruit on the palate as well, along with notes of black pepper and smoky vanilla. Becomes brighter with air, picking up a black raspberry quality and showing very good concentration. On the modern side but there's also good tension here. Finishes sweet, broad and long-and drinking very well now.
