About This Wine:From the same people who make Numanthia. This wine is made from 30 year-old ungrafted Tina de Toro vines. This went through malolactic fermentation and was aged 20 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. This is a very rare wine, and not a whole lot makes it over into the U.S. Once the high ratings come in, this wine will most likely be completely gone.
What Does It Taste Like?
Spicy, oak-inflected aromas of cherry, licorice and roasted coffee. Medium-bodied and firm, the cherry flavor braced by fresh acids and supported by gentle, dusty tannins. Finishes youthfully taut and with impressive persistence, a note of tobacco sneaking in on the back.
Ratings & Reviews
91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This bold red matches ripe blackberry and currant flavors with toast, dark chocolate and oak notes. The tannins are firm and well-integrated, and the smoky mineral note is alluring. Drink now through 2016. 7,000 cases made." –TM (Dec 31, 2010)
91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced dark berries and fresh flowers on the nose, along with notes of cola and star anise. Lush, palate-coating blackberry and candied cherry flavors are lifted by tangy acidity and gain sweetness with air. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the lush fruit flavors and carry through a long, spicy finish. Give this a bit of air if you plan to open it any time soon." - Josh Raynolds (Sep/Oct 10)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 Points ('07 vintage):"The 2007 Termes is a bit more elegant with its velvety texture, ripe tannins, and silky finish. It, too, has the ability to improve with 2-3 years of cellaring, but can be enjoyed now.
Bodegas Numanthia-Termes was sold by the Eguren family to Moet-Hennessey prior to the 2006 vintage. What this might ultimately mean for quality or style of the wine remains to be seen but there is no questioning the performance of the 2006 and 2007 vintages." - Jay Miller (4/2010)
Wine Spectator Magazine - 93 Points ('06 vintage):
"Muscular yet expressive, this red offers roasted plum, bitter chocolate, tobacco and hot stone notes. Thick, with rich, ripe tannins and just enough acidity to keep it lively. Best from 2010 through 2020." (April 15, 2009)
Wine Enthusiast Magazine - 92 Points ('06 vintage):"Dark, rubbery and focused on the nose, while the palate is wider, richer and propped up by a band of zesty acidity. The flavors are typical of Toro, meaning dark blackberry and boysenberry. A finish of brandied berries, kirsch and chocolate is almost like dessert." (August, 2009)
