Ratings / Reviews:

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 89 Points (April 2006):
"Reignac is the poster child for a modern-styled, “better than its pedigree” Bordeaux Superieur. The wine’s high quality is a testament to the exceptional commitment demonstrated by proprietor Yves Vatelot. This large (125 acres) hillside vineyard, planted in gravelly/clay soils, is composed of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields are often lower than many classified growths’.

The elegant, spicy 2003 Reignac reveals sweet cassis fruit, notions of smoke and herbs, supple tannin, and low acidity. While this sexy, seductive 2003 may not possess the extra level of concentration found in such top vintages as 2000 or 2001, it offers beautiful fruit as well as equilibrium. Enjoy it now and over the next 7-8 years." -Robert Parker, April 2006

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 90-91 Points (April 2005):
"A big, broadly-styled Reignac, with more alcohol than usual (about 13.5%), the deep ruby/purple-hued 2003 offers a big, smoky, chocolatey, black currant, licorice, and pain grille-scented bouquet. This broad, voluptuous, succulently-textured offering is more forward than most Reignacs. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. " -Robert Parker, April 2005

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 89-91 Points (April 2004):
"The revolutionary Yves Vatelot continues to make waves with the extraordinary efforts he produces at Reignac. Planted with 6,000 vines per hectare, and entitled only to a Bordeaux Superieur designation, it is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned from tiny yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. The vineyard is crop-thinned, and the wine is given all the state of the art winemaking treatments (most of them inherited from Burgundy), including aging on its lees, malolactic in barrel, and no fining or filtering. There are 16,000 cases of the 2003, which tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color, a smoky, chocolatey bouquet offering black and red fruits, a good underpinning of tannin, a broad palate, outstanding purity, and a fat, layered finish. This top-notch effort may be just as good as the 2000, but is more evolved and forward. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012." -Robert Parker, April 2004

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - 89 Points:
"Medium red. Sweet plum, cherry, mocha and espresso on the nose. Sweet and fat with fruit, with the plum and mocha flavors continuing on the palate. There's a touch of finishing dryness here but also very good plummy persistence. Very good for the vintage. Today I'm not yet convinced that the young 2005 will be better." -Stephen Tanzer, June 2006

Old world meets hot year July 16, 2010
Reviewer: Robert Rich from Mountain View, CA United States
Excellent value for a mature wine that drinks beautifully right now. 2003 was such a hot summer that most lovers of classic French wines wrote it off for a loss, disparaging it by saying it would result in overripe, New-World style wines. Instead I would say this resembles a good Italian wine, ripe but balanced, with earthy and herbal qualities, with a bit more oak. The nose offers bright notes of dusty red fruit - cran-raspberry opening into strawberry and bergamot. A stoney framework of wet granite hovers behind tobacco and dusty books, with smoke and a hint of bretty wet hay. The flavors are generous on the palate, deep but not super-concentrated. Smooth red berry fruits, tobacco and a slight aftertaste of raisin (typical of the hot vintage). Tannins are soft and fine grained, but linger nicely. I'll buy a case!
