Ratings & Reviews

95-97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The blend of the 2008 Insignia, 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, is not terribly different from the 2007. However, I suspect the production will be a lot less given the frost damage in early spring. The color is an inky/purple and the wine shows lots of cassis, blueberry, graphite and floral notes, good acidity, stunning concentration and purity, and a long finish. Another great success for Phelps, the 2007 and 2008 Insignias may be the best back-to-back vintages they have produced since 1995 and 1994. The 2008 has some tannins to resolve whereas the 2007 has already assimilated them. It appears the 2008 will require 2-3 years of bottle age, but should last for three decades.

Joseph Phelps’ flagship wine, which they have been making for 36 years, is the Insignia, which boasts a remarkable track record. Phelps, always a visionary, was the first to recognize that a blend of grapes could be better than a single varietal cuvee. Phelps produces a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Backus Vineyard situated on the eastern slopes of the Oakville Corridor overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate." -Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

95 Points – James Suckling:
“What a wonderful wine here. The nose shows a fabulous combination of dark fruits, chocolate, spices and caramel. The palate is silky textured with lots of ripe yet beautiful fruit and super silky, tight tannins This is a balanced wine with all the potential to age for decades. Made from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot.” (June 15th, 2011)

96 Points – James Suckling:
"I really like the mint and floral notes on the nose that opens up to dark fruits. Full bodied and rich, with plums, berries, and currants. This starts off slow, then takes off with a bang. A stylish wine with wonderful potential. This will be bottled in January 2011." (January 7th, 2011)

94 Points – Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Dense and chewy, this is very tight and closed, but the glimpses of fruit offer tight mineral, crushed rock, graphite, dried currant, cedar and anise. Full-bodied and way too young to drink now, this needs time, but should provide years of rewarding drinking. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Best from 2014 through 2026."—J.L. (Aug 31, 2011)

93+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Full medium ruby.  Black fruits, minerals, licorice, tar, menthol and sweet oak on the nose.  Sweet and creamy on entry, then quite penetrating and tight in the mid-palate, showing a medicinal reserve for the vintage.  A backward and rather powerful Insignia with the structure to require, and reward, considerable aging.  This was a good quantity year for this flagship bottling, with about 16,000 cases produced." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '11)

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve carries the full classic aromas of crème de cassis, licorice, and cedarwood with layers of spice, camphor and roasted herbs. On the palate, the wine reflects the very expressive terroir of the To Kalon Vineyard with ripe blue and black fruits—mineral-laced dark berries and powerful, integrated tannins for which this vineyard is known. The lush aromatics and well developed flavors are wrapped in firm, velvety tannins, giving the wine an exceedingly long, aristocratic finish.

Ratings & Reviews

95+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and graphite. One would have to go back to the 1990, 1991, 2001, or 2002 to find a Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this impressive. The 2007 should evolve for 20-25 years.

I know there have been a lot of concerns about the huge Constellation empire running Mondavi, but these remain very impressive wines." - Robert Parker (12/2009)

95 Points & "Collectibles" - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A wonderful expression of stylish Cabernet that's ripe, fleshy, complex and layered, highlighting ripe currant, wild berry and blueberry, with touches of cedar and cigar box. The flavors gain traction on the finish. Drink now through 2022. 9,590 cases made." –JL (9/30/2010)

95 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Bone dry and utterly balanced, with deeply powerful, long-lasting flavors of blackberries and black currants and an intense, but integrated, coating of smoky oak. But it’s also very tannic. Nothing soft about this wine. As fine a cellar candidate as any Mondavi Reserve in years. Should develop for 12, 15, even 20 years." - S.H.  (10/1/2010)

94 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"(92% To Kalon fruit) Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe, nuanced nose and palate offer cassis, minerals, graphite and licorice, plus a complicating note of tarry oak. Sweet, dense and rich, with classic Oakville cabernet flavors; strongly mineral- and soil-driven. Offers a lovely combination of fat, chewiness and sheer power. Finish with a mouthful of sweet tannins and excellent structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. This has turned out very well and should ultimately surpass the 2006." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '10)

Notes from the Winemaker:

The rich, deep ruby color reflects the magnificent depth this wine has to offer. Lush aromas of ripe black currant, black cherry and cedary oak add luxurious notes to the intense core flavors of fully ripe cassis, wild red berry, mocha and light vanilla. Polished tannins, a full-bodied mouthfeel and velvety texture weave seamlessly to support these vivid fruit impressions to the end.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Temptingly rich and layered, with complex mocha, plum and wild berry fruit that’s spicy and aromatic. Full-bodied, gaining depth and turning ever more elegant and detailed, with tannins that give this traction. Drink now through 2019."—J.L. (Sept 2011)

98 Points - James Suckling (2008 vintage):
"This is mind-blowing on the nose with sweet tobacco, chocolate, cedar, cigar box, and licorice. Full-bodied and round with a bright and velvety tannin structure. Starts off slow, but then flies away. This is fabulous. Intense finish. Delicious today, but will be even better after 2013." - (June 15, 2011)
