Press / Wine Critic's Reviews

The 2007 was Rank #43 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2010

Notes from the Winemaker:

“The H3 Merlot opens with aromas of raspberries, black pepper and earthy tones which lead to flavors of chocolate covered cherries and plum preserves on the silky smooth palate. The flavors and aromas cumulate in to an intense – yet elegant – finish."
-Juan Munoz Oca, Winemaker

The Horse Heaven Hills, which have been home to Columbia Crest for more than two decades, are the source and inspiration behind our “H3” wines. The unique terroir of this appellation imparts remarkable fruit intensity with mineral undertones from the cooler vineyard sites, and slight earth and cocoa elements from the warmer sites. These variances allow our winemaker to blend wines that capture the true essence of the Horse Heaven Hills in the bottle.

Ratings & Reviews

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Fresh and vibrant, this is lively with dark berry, mocha and tobacco flavors, finishing with a mild grip of tannins. Drink now through 2013. 58,000 cases made." –HS (Nov 30, 2011)

90 Points & "Smart Buys" -
Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Ripe, supple and seductive, delivering a plush mouthful of red berry, floral and pomegranate flavors, swirling effectively through the deftly balanced finish. Drink now through 2016." -H.S. (3/31/2011)

91 Points, Rank #43 Top 100 Wines of 2010 & "Smart Buys" -
Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Dark, supple and generous with its blackberry and black currant flavors, which play against superfine tannins on an open-textured finish. Floral, savory overtones add depth. Best from 2011 through 2017." -HS (Feb 2010)

Best Merlot - "Best American Wines Under $20" - Food & Wine Magazine (2007 vintage):
"This widely available Merlot comes from Washington's Horse Heaven Hills (hence H3), a promising region for complex, full-bodied reds. Its ripe blackberry fruit keeps some needed restraint thanks to the skill of winemaker Ray Einberger." -Richard Nalley
