Grape: 100% Aglianico

Considered by many the greatest producer of Aglianico del Vulture, few winemakers define a generation the way that Donato d'Angelo has. Aglianico del Vulture is one Italy's most powerful and collectible red wines. Though D’Angelo’s Aglianico Riserva wine has remarkable aging potential it is already drinking well. One of our favorite examples of Aglianico, the wine has a marked volcanic minerality that you find only in Basilicata’s Aglianico del Vulture DOC. Donato says that the 2004 vintage was the best he has seen in twenty years.

"The estate’s 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Riserva Caselle is a fabulous wine that showcases the virtues of Aglianico in the Vulture district. This mid-weight wine flows effortlessly with layers of red fruit, spices, dried flowers, licorice, anise and tobacco. At six years of age, some of the more secondary aromas and flavors have begun to develop, foreshadowing the direction the wine will take in the future. As always, some of the rougher edges of Aglianico from the Vulture remain, but that notwithstanding, this is a magnificent bottle of wine. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2022.
