Notes from the Winemaker:
From 4-H beginnings, to an enology degree at UC Davis, and after stints at
Grgich Hills, Storybook Mountain, Rombauer, and Frank Family Vineyards, Duane David Dappen ("d" cubed!) launched his own Napa Valley label with grapes from the now esteemed
Black Sears Vineyard. An unabashed zinfandel lover, he left Frank Family officially in 2002 to devote the majority of his time to this project.
Duane also consults for Howell Mountain's Bravante Vineyard and Chiles Valley's Brown Estate.I was lucky enough to have the chance to get a few tons of fruit from Melvin Cooke’s old head-trained vineyard on Highway 29 between St. Helena and Calistoga. The vines have beautiful red leaves and small crops of deep dark berries. I produced the wine as I do my Zinfandels, with gentle handling to preserve the fruit and spice. Even with this handling Petite Sirah produces a wine that is very dark and has some big tannins. I am not sure who named this varietal Petite Sirah because it is anything but petite.
