Notes from the Winemaker:
"The story goes that when the Lord of Puligny had to share out his lands between his children, he gave his legitimate son the plot which was to become the 'Chevalier-Montrachet' and his illegitimate son, three plots named 'Bâtard-Montrachet', 'Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet' and' Criot-Bâtard-Montrachet'. As for his daughters, they were to receive a plot named 'Les Pucelles' (The Maidens)."
Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.
Terroir: Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet sits in the shadows of Batard Montrachet above the 1er Cru vineyards of Puligny Montrachet. The overall vineyard is just 10 acres with Domaine Faiveley controlling a single parcel of 1.25 acres almost directly below their parcel of Batard. Soils remain consistent to Batard with clay and white marl, but as the hillside has flattened, the wines produced tend to be more "Puligny" like showing elegance over power.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. The grapes are cold fermented entirely in oak prior to aging in the cellars for 14-16 months in a combination of new and used oak. New barrels represent approximately 70% of the selection.
Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2009 vintage):"Full yellow. Peach nectar, honey, vanilla and musky lees on the nose. Concentrated, sweet and deep; wonderfully chewy grand cru and surprisingly open-knit today. A saline character adds an element of interest to the lingering finish. This seems approachable now but should have the stuffing to age." - Stephen Tanzer (Sep/Oct '11)
94 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):"Full yellow-gold. Knockout nose combines apricot, orange, lime, minerals and dried flowers. Big and rich but tightly coiled, with strong acidity and deep minerality intensifying the fruit and powdered stone flavors. Notes of tarragon and anise emerged with aeration. Perhaps most impressive today for its long, palate-staining finish, which features terrific spicy lift, a note of green almond and a captivating peppery pungency. A great example of this grand cru." - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Sep/Oct '10)
