About this wine:

Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.

Terroir: The 30+ acre 1er Cru Les Rugiens lies on the upper slopes above the village of Pommard. Domaine Faiveley's 1./26 acre single parcel was acquired in 2007 and runs from top to bottom in the northern section of the vineyard names "les Rugiens Hauts". Sun exposure is east/ south-east with soils of scree (crushed rock) marl and iron oxide.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a short maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 70% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Ratings & Reviews

92-95 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Good full, bright red.  Subtle, high-pitched aromas of cherry, tobacco, leather and dried rose.  Sweet, creamy and deep, with some CO2 adding to the impression of freshness.  Wonderfully perfumed, very long wine, finishing with outstanding finesse of tannins, complex saline soil tones, and terrific energy and lift.  Pommard without a whisper of rusticity." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '12)

91-93 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
"A fresh, cool and restrained nose of surpassing elegance displays airy red berry fruit, in particular raspberry and currant. Interestingly for a Rugiens, this is almost delicate on the mid-palate but there is excellent power and plenty of underlying tension to the very firmly structured, linear and somewhat strict if wonderfully persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. I wouldn't buy this unless you expressly intend to cellar it for at least a decade." (Jan 10, 2012)

90-93 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2009 vintage):
"Deep red-ruby. Complex aromas of redcurrant, minerals, iron and tobacco, plus a whiff of oak. Then silky and nuanced in the mouth, with the redcurrant and iron notes complicated by soil tones. Not as high-pitched as the best Faiveley 2009s from the Cote de Nuits, but true to its terroir Some smoky oak carries through onto the aftertaste." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '11)

91+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):
"Palish medium red.  Musky aromas of iron, minerals, cherry pit and celery seed.  Juicy and perfumed but currently restrained and not quite following through on the nose, with a strong element of smoky, flinty minerality lifted by a hint of white fruits.  Finishes saline and insinuating, with very suave tannins.  Very 2008 in style:  will time in bottle bring more heft?" - Stephen Tanzer (Mar/Apr '11)
