About this wine:Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.
Terroir: The 15 acre 1er Cru Fremiets is located on the border with Pommard in the heart of the 1er Cru vineyards of Volnay. Domaine Faiveley acquired their 1.83 acre parcel in 2007. The plot runs the length of the vineyard contains a slight grade and an exposure facing east/ southeast. Soils are poor and composed primarily of clay and limestone.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a 18-20 day maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 30% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 14 to 16 months.
Ratings & Reviews:89-91 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
"This is a classic Volnay with an ultra-elegant and admirably pure nose of red pinot fruit and floral notes that marry into intensely stony, vibrant and utterly delicious flavors that possess a lacy, even slightly creamy texture on the lingering finish. This is certainly attractive though it perhaps doesn't quite have the laser-like delineation that one often experiences with a fine Frémiets. That is a minor nit however and overall this is lovely." 88-91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Bright medium red. Reticent aromas of cherry, menthol and spices. A step up in sweetness from the Clos de l'Ecu but youthfully closed today, showing more saline and spice notes than primary fruit. Finishes with some firm, oak-driven tannins." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '12)
90-92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2009 vintage):
"Deep red. Very ripe aromas of raspberry, mocha and flowers. Sweet, broad and deep, with captivating flavors of raspberry, spice and underbrush. Nicely balanced wine with a subtle, rising finish featuring fine tannins. This was to have been bottled in December." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb '11)
