Background
Fernand Léchenaut bought the 22-hectare Domaine in the 1960’s. Based mainly in the Côte de Nuits region, the estate is spread through the appellations of Nuit-St-Georges, Morey-St-Denis, Vosne Romanée and Chambolle Musigny. In addition the Domaine has a small vineyard in the grand cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St-Denis. 90% of the vines are Pinot Noir, 5% Chardonnay and 5% Aligote.
Domaine Fernand Lécheneaut has been run since 1985 by brothers Vincent and Philippe Lécheneaut, who are admirable vignerons. The traditional estate in Nuits St Georges is considered one of the finest in Burgundy. Once harvested the wine spends 18 months in barrique without any fining or filtration. The wines produced here are superbly crafted, concentrated yet forward and elegant with well integrated oak. Wine availability is strictly limited.
Ratings & Reviews
87-90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:"Deep red with ruby highlights. Expressive nose melds dark fruits, smoked meat and leather. A step up in intensity over the foregoing village wines, with good density to its black cherry fruit. A solidly built wine with good cut and clarity. Finishes with some chocolatey oak notes and serious tannins supported by fruit. " - Stephen Tanzer (Mar/Apr '10)
Allen Meadows' Burghound:"A very somber and reserved nose that is very Nuits with its intense earthy and sauvage character enhancing the dark fruit aromas that marry into rustic and tautly muscled medium weight flavors that possess a rounded, lingering and surprisingly velvety finish where the tannins are quite firm. Very solid quality for what this is." (Jan 30, 2010)
