Notes from the Winemaker:
Vinification: El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from estate vineyards in the Rioja Alta. The wine is slowly vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 20-30 days. The wine receives extended skin contact to encourage extraction, balanced tannins and structure, followed by 18 months of aging in new and used American oak and 24 months in bottle prior to release.
Notes
The wine displays complex, red berry aromas with smoky vanilla notes. On the palate, there's round, warm and juicy spiced red cherry fruit with a velvety character, and ripe tannins are apparent as a firm but pliant structure. The wine's suave tannins and acidity will help the wine mature very well in bottle.
Ratings & Reviews:
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate"The 2005 Coto de Imaz Reserva is predominantly Tempranillo with a
dollop of Graciano aged for 18 months in American oak. Dark ruby red
with a fragrant nose of cedar, rose petal, cherry, and cassis that jumps
from the glass, on the palate it displays an elegant personality, good
concentration, savory flavors, and enough structure to evolve for
several years. It should be at its best from 2012 to 2020."
Wine Spectator Magazine:"This traditional-style red shows dried cherry, tobacco, spice and leaf flavors, enlivened by bright acidity and supported by gentle tannins. Supple, balanced and fresh. Drink now."
Wine Enthusiast MagazineMuch
like the 2004, this wine straddles traditional and modern lines. The
nose offers light raisin, spearmint, brick dust and leafy red fruit
aromas, while the palate may seem acidic and sour to some but reflective
of old Rioja to others. Strong American oak accents of dill, coconut
and vanilla are present on the palate and finish.
