About This Wine:
Pronounced - Pee-all-vah 100 % Vermentino and made from ten year old vines that sit in calcareous soil and have a north/south orientation. There is a constant presence of wind on the vineyard but a high average temperature and little rain. Giovanni uses native yeasts and the wine is steel vat fermented.
Giovanni Cherchi has been in the wine business in one form or another for quite some time. His first vintage dates back to 1980 and before then his wine was sold to other wineries. Cherchi has been a point of reference for many wineries in Sardegna (Sardinia); it was Giovanni who contributed to the fame of Vermentino di Sardegna beyond the regional boundary. He was the first to experiment with making wines on the lees in order to make richer and more complex wines. One might say he is an innovator. Giovanni, who is now in his 70s, has passed the torch to his children Salvatore and Annalisa, however, he still oversees the work in the vineyard and winery. The Cherchis are faithful to indigenous grape varieties. Today the estate has 30 hecatares located on the hills in Usini, northwest of Sardinia. Vermentino occupies 55% of the vineyard with the remaining planted to Cannonau and Cagnulari.
Ratings & Reviews
2 Glasses - Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia:"You can be confident when you buy wine from Giovanni Cherchi. The average quality produced at this winery in Usini has been great for years now, putting him into the front rank of island estates... Pigalva '09 plays more off tones of white peach and wisteria... (2011)"
