Notes from the Winemaker:

The first vintage of Vinnae was 1983. It was created in celebration of the birth of Silvio Jermann’s second son, and to commemorate the family’s 100 years of winemaking at Villanova. Five Jermann generations have tended Ribolla in the Collio vineyards of the village, earning themselves the title of “vinnaioli” or “wine growers”. Hence the choice of the name “Vinnae” for this Ribolla-based wine.

The label was restyled twice in recent years: a first time in 2005 (2004 vintage), with the addition of a double-headed eagle that recalled the family’s Austro-Hungarian origins (great-grandfather Anton) and mention of the three varieties as the “three souls of Collio” (i.e. the threefold heritage of Slovenia, Friuli and Austria); then a second time in 2006 (from the 2005 vintage), when the eagle was replaced with the J for Jermann. Both versions include the phrase “servus cella”, indicating Silvio’s total absorption in (vineyard and) cellar.

Tasting Notes:
Brilliant, light straw yellow in color. On the nose, fruit aromas with a mineral undertone. On the palate it is dry, fresh and tangy with the unassuming elegance of an authentic country wine. Vinnae is delicious as an aperitif and it is also an excellent match for seafood starters and first course dishes with fish. Its freshness and irresistible drinkability make it an ideal summer white.

Ratings & Reviews

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Vinnae Servus Cella (mostly Ribolla Gialla) shows lovely detail and nuance in its well delineated layers of white peach, mint, smoke, minerals and earthiness. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013.

These new releases from Silvio Jermann include a number of fabulous bottles. In particular, I was impressed with the top 2008s, a vintage where the cool minerality of the year prevails over the house’s typically lush style, an approach I tend to find less interesting. Jermann has a new red on the horizon, the Pignolo Vigna Truss, from recently purchased hillside vineyards in Dolegna, the home of his massive, new cellar. Previously, Jermann’s Pignolo had mostly come from the flats of Villanova, a far less prestigious village in Isonzo, rather than the Collio. I tasted all of the 2009 entry-level whites from screwcaps. Readers should be aware that Jermann is owned by my wife’s uncle. I have always viewed education as an important component of wine criticism. An article on Friuli without these wines would have been incomplete and ultimately the consumer would have been poorer for their exclusion. For those reasons I have chosen to include the wines in this report. Neither my wife nor I have any financial or other interest, direct or indirect, in this property." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2011)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('08 Vintage):

"The 2008 Vinnae is a blend of Ribolla Gialla, Friulano and Riesling meant to represent the elements of Slovenian, Friulian and Austrian traditions that inform Friuli’s rich cultural fabric. This is a layered, expressive wine laced with generous, perfumed fruit. The wine offers excellent persistence and a refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011. " - Antonio Galloni (Oct 2009)
