Grape Variety: Lagrein

Vineyard / Origin: This is one of Alto Adige's native vines which flourishes in the hillsides around TraminTermeno and in good sites at Ora/Auer on the opposite side of the Adige Valley.

Description: Full, bright ruby, almost black in colour, this is an extremely typical Lagrein, very easily recognisable. It is immediately impressive due to the excellent equilibrium between intensity and complexity, between aromas of spice and small woodland berry fruits and violets. Its fragrance is striking, clear, captivating and fresh. Very harmonious on the palate, with assertive but supple tannins, full, broad, velvety, round with subtle spice on the finish enlivened by palate-lifting acidity.

Food Choices: Red meats, game, venison and seasoned cheeses.

"Dark fruit, flowers, spices, licorice and minerals play off each other beautifully in the 2008 Lagrein. Many of the rustic qualities of Lagrein have been tamed. What remains is a fresh, fruit-driven wine that will provide considerable pleasure in the coming years. Hofstatter gave the Lagrein ten months in Slavonian oak casks. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.

Proprietor Martin Foradori may be best known for his higher-end wines, but readers will find plenty to like in these more approachable entry-level offerings."
