Notes from the Winemaker:

Esoterica's mantra is simple: Explore the nuances and uniqueness of rare, under-used and even unknown varieties and hopefully provide a “spark” for the wider acceptance of grapes that are “different”!  We've become so dependent here in Napa on certain grapes, so it's important to us to keep alive the thrill of discovery.  Petite Sirah is the cornerstone wine for the Esoterica label, and each year we introduce small lots of interesting wines into the stable.  These are brief glimpses of greatness, so get them when you can and stock up if you love them.

Vineyard: Frank and Beth Leed's Vineyard in Rutherford
News Flash!  this wine will receive 94 Points and an "Editor's Choice" designation in the September 2010 issue of Wine Enthusiast magazine.

I have been making wine out of these wonderful grapes for almost 20 vintages, now. Each year the grower and I learn a bit more about how to grow the grapes more perfectly, and I learn a little more about how to make the wine better. This wine has been my favorite “Pets” project for years and years now, and I never get tired of drinking the result!

While Petite Sirah started out in France as a minor variety of the Rhone, it is no longer grown there and is only grown to a tiny extent, under the name “Durif”, anywhere else in the world. One could say that Petite Sirah, at this point, is THE grape of California. Every winemaker I know thinks of it as their favorite grape. What makes “pets” so good? Hard to say, it just is perfect—perfect fruit, perfect weight, and perfect structure, wonderful to drink young, even better to drink old.

This wine is a winner. It is immense, it will take no hostages, it will sooth, it will please, and in the end you will be pouring out your other wines because they just don’t satisfy you anymore…you will never want to drink anything but (this) Petite Sirah again!

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points & "Editor's Choice" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Very dry and tannic, as Petite Sirah should be. But unlike many “Pets,” it’s also balanced and elegant. The official alcohol
is only 13.5%, yet there’s not a trace of greenness. In fact, the wine, which has plenty of French oak, is quite rich in blackberry and black currant flavors. Really a superb example, a Petite Sirah for Cabernet fans. Should evolve interestingly for many years. Editors’ Choice." (9/2010)
