About This Wine:

A remarkable wine that surpasses in length and spice the estate’s extraordinary 2007—we think it’s even better suited for the table as its balance is superior.  A blend of 42%Grenache, 20% Syrah, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Carignan  from mostly older vines, grown on the region’s granite-rich soils; 100% organically raised and vinified completely in tank.  A deep purple in the glass; the nose is a pepper festival, with black and pink peppercorns mixing with wildflowers and dark roses.  Garrigue—the classic Provencal herbs of rosemary, wild thyme and lavender—are abundant in both the wine’s aromas and on the palate.  Purple fruits dominate the mouth, with a plumy richness and a black truffle edge that is earthy and delicious—it reminds us a bit of Bandol.  The Rouge is certainly the longest wine we’ve tasted from this organic estate—peppers and spices linger for what seems like hours.

About This Producer:

This storied domaine, run with passion and skill by Luc and Lucienne Cartier, has been farming and making wine organically for decades.  Their gorgeous property in the beautiful countryside appellation of Les Baux de Provence yields powerful expressions of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and more – not to mention olives (their oil is one of France’s finest), and incredible fruit and vegetables.  Luc and Lucienne’s wines combine the richness and intensity of top Rhone or Bordeaux with a crystal-clear and unmistakable expression of Provençal soil.  They set themselves apart even further from the pack with the eye-grabbing rustic, squat bottle used for their unbelievably great-value red.

Ratings & Reviews

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The 2007 Les Baux de Provence constitutes nearly 30% each of Carignan and Grenache, with slightly smaller shares of Cabernet Sauvignon (hence considerably less than in several recent vintages) and Syrah. Smelling delightfully of fresh plums, sandalwood, ginger, cinnamon, lavender, and a hint of game, it comes onto the palate expansively and with fine-grained underlying tannins. Juniper and cassis add a pleasantly bitter pungency to the finish, contributing along with saline and smoky notes to the invigoration of a long finish. This understated wine will not only offer highly versatile enjoyment over the next 3-4 years but should blossom further as well." - David Schildknecht (Aug 2009)
