About This Wine:

Domaine du Monteillet is located above the village of Chavanay, near Condrieu. Stephane Montez is a young, dynamic and talented winemaker who took over the family vineyard in 1997. The winery was originally founded in 1732 and Stephane represents the 10th generation of winemakers in the family. Stephane traveled to California, Australia and South Africa to work and experiment winemaking before returning to the family estate.

The first vintage of the St. Joseph was released in 1989, when Antoine, Stephane's father, became a “Papy” (a grandpa). The wine is produced from a selection of the best vines, best grapes and best barrels. This cuvée “à l’ancienne” (in the old-fashioned way) is produced from old vines Syrah planted to granite soils. Aged for 24 months in French oak demi-muids (big barrels), it has been bottled without fining or filtration.

What Does It Taste Like?

Deep ruby color. Intense aromas of pepper and violet. Cassis, tapenade, wood nuances. Full bodied, rich and round on the palate. Fine tannins, violet, pepper and cassis. Elegance and finesse. A baby Cote-Rotie.

Ratings & Reviews:

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Deep ruby. Sexy, perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves, potpourri and cured meat. Midweight red and dark berry flavors shows very good depth, with no rough edges or obvious tannins. The finish is sweet and impressively pure. This spent 24 months in demi-muids." - Josh Raynolds (Jan/Feb '09)

90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2005 vintage):
"Opaque ruby. Deep and smoky, with ripe blackberry and spiced plum aromas underscored by musky tobacco and licorice. Bitter cherry and dark berries on the palate, with chewy tannins and a long, sweet finish. The tannins here are quite soft. As I tasted his Saint-Josephs, Stephane Montez lamented that the American market is too often a captive of appellation names. "You can have a great Saint-Joseph, made from an amazing vineyard, from really old vines, a great old clone, severe selection and so on, and it might be better than half the Cote-Roties out there. But if you charge a little less than for a below-average Cote-Rotie, or maybe even less than for a really bad one, the merchants say that your price is too high. They tell me 'I can't sell Saint-Joseph for that price,' sometimes before they've even tasted it!" - Josh Raynolds (Jan/Feb '08)

88-90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"A top-notch effort, although very limited, is the 2005 St.-Joseph Cuvee du Papy, which is aged in demi-muids prior to bottling. The wine offers excellent black cherry, herb-tinged fruit, medium to full body, and moderate tannins and structure. It should drink well for a decade or more." - Robert Parker (Apr 2007)
