Tasting Notes:

Deep and live ruby red color. The wine has a very elegant and evident Carmenère tipicity, showing lovely black pepper aromas with hints of red berries, chocolate, a bit of vanilla and black plums. In the mouth is distinctively smooth, with rounded and soft tannins. Long finish. The oak is beautifully integrated and balanced.

Winemaking:

The grapes come from our Arcangel Estate located at the very West of Colchagua valley. With only 11 miles (18 Kms) from the Pacific Ocean, the relatively cold climate allows us to ripe the grapes slowly and smoothly, reaching full maturation and fruit expression. The soil profile is on majority clay that provides strength and power to the wine.

The grapes are handpicked using small bins in order to keep the grapes is perfect conditions before reaching the winemaking process and then macerated at low temperatures (48°F / 9°C) for 7 days before fermentation. The fermentation process last 10 days, period on which few pump over process are made in order to obtain color and soft tannins. Once the fermentation process is finished, the wine is moved to French oak barrels (new and used) where it is kept for 12 months.

90% Carmenère, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Alpha Carmenere is a glass-coating opaque purple with a nose of damp earth, mineral, sage, thyme, tobacco, and blueberry. Dense and full-bodied on the palate, it reveals layers of ripe fruit, lots of spice, and enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years. It will deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2020." -Jay Miller (Dec 2010)

91 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The 2007 Alpha Carmenere is a superb rendition of this fascinating grape variety. A saturated purple in color, it has a superb aromatic array of spice, lavender, incense, smoke, and blueberry. Layered, plush, and concentrated, it has excellent depth and grip, enough well-hidden structure to evolve for several years, and a long, fruit filled finish. Drink it from 2012 to 2020." -Jay Miller, June 2009

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Fans of this Chilean Specialty should be thrilled because this wine is well made and complete. Mint, plum, blackberry, cola and fine leather grace the nose, while the palate sings with forward but balanced black fruit and tobacco flavors. Elevated Carmenère; great for the faithful as well for newcomers."
