Notes from the Winemaker:

Aurelio’s intuition led him to plant Syrah in the higher slopes of our Apalta Mountain Estate. Thus the Montes Folly name was born: The conventional wine growers and trade considered it "Folly" to plant Syrah, an untested variety in the region, and double "Folly" to do so in the higher slopes, extremely expensive to clear, plant and grow. The genius of Aurelio, however, had us all firmly believing from the start that Montes Folly would be the wild dream we sought, the perfect partner to our beloved Montes Alpha "M".

Montes Folly is grown on the very highest slopes of our "la Finca de Apalta" vineyard, in Apalta Valley, with an inclination exceeding 45º degrees. These high reaches are home to the superb grapes that become Montes Folly, Chile’s first ultra-premium Syrah. Yields are extremely low at less than 4 tons per hectare, with grapes and clusters that are much smaller and even more concentrated than in the vineyard’s lower slopes. As a result, they deliver more color and tannins, making Montes Folly richly colored, complex and powerful, with over 14% alcohol. Montes Folly’s blockbuster style and lingering finish attest to its pedigree.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):
"The 2006 Folly is a world class Syrah (not only because of the superb Ralph Steadman label). It is sourced from a ridiculously steep vineyard in Apalta and aged for 18 months in new French oak. Inky black in color, it reveals a super-expressive nose of toasty new oak, pepper, lavender, game, incense, and blueberry. Voluptuous on the palate but not heavy, it has gobs of sweet fruit, layers of flavor, a firm structure, and 5-7 years of aging potential. Drink this impeccably balanced, lengthy effort from 2015 to 2026.

Aurelio Montes remains one of Chile's great innovators and quality leaders. His latest releases are first class from entry level to the top of the portfolio." - Jay Miller (Jun 2009)

94 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine
(2006 vintage):
"Rich and lush, but with superb poise, this offers a huge core of crushed plum, raspberry ganache and macerated currant fruit that easily absorbs its dark, coffee-tinged toast and muscular, loamy undertow. The finish is powerful, but well-knit. Should age nicely. Syrah. Best from 2010 through 2014. 4,500 cases made." –JM (May 31, 2009)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2006 vintage):
"Montes Folly is the benchmark by which all other Chilean Syrahs must measure themselves. Yes, it’s entirely New World in its approach, but how can you gripe about such a potent brew of balsam wood, tanned leather, licorice, mineral and monster black fruit? The palate is big but balanced by live-wire acidity, and even at 15% alcohol it’s harmonious. A real winner; one of the best Folly wines to date."  - M.S.  (7/1/2009)

90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):
"Inky ruby. Powerful scents of blackcurrant, raspberry, Asian spices and vanilla. Supple and sweet on the palate, offering broad red and dark berry liqueur and floral pastille flavors and a velvety texture. The tannins seem invisible. Plenty alluring, with excellent finishing clarity and persistence, but the price is hardly shy." - Josh Raynolds (Mar/Apr 09)
