About This Wine:

Our 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon derives depth and breadth of character from the diverse terroir represented by State Lane, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Beckstoffer Las Piedras, Flat Rock and Stagecoach vineyards. Black garnet in hue, concentrated aromas of black currant, blackberry and lavender delight. Freshly cut flowers, cedar, caramel and violets entice the palate. The fruit is pure and elegant, displaying faceted layers of dark cherry, cassis and plum. Velvety tannins wave together with layers of milk cocoa, anise and graphite to create a
charming and lengthy finish. Alcohol 14.8%

Ratings & Reviews

92+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley wraps around the palate with mocha, chocolate, violets and new leather. Despite its explosive personality, the straight Napa Valley bottling is pretty approachable for the vintage. I especially like the focus of the finish. In 2010, the Cabernet Sauvignon includes 6% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sources are State Lane, Stagecoach and Mast. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

One of the greatest attributes of the Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignons is their ability to deliver incredible pleasure throughout their entire lives. I tasted a wide range of wines this year with Paul Hobbs and winemaker Megan Baccitich, including several past vintages of the flagship To Kalon, which confirmed that view. In particular, the 2001 and 2002 To Kalon Cabernets remain stunning, and the straight 1999 Napa Valley Cabernet was equally impressive." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2012)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Dense, yet supple and graceful, with tiers of black fruit, blackberry, wild berry, subtle spice, cedar and black licorice flavors. Ends with firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2022. 2,954 cases made." –JL (6/30/2013)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2009 vintage):
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, juicy wine loaded with dark fruit, mocha, spices and new leather. This rich, expansive Cabernet boasts tons of class and sheer personality. Mint, licorice and spices add complexity as the dark fruit fleshes out on the finish. This is a fabulous wine for the money. The Cabernet is made from To Kalon, Dr. Crane, Las Piedras, Stagecoach and Hyde, and includes a dollop of Petit Verdot from Stagecoach. It is a fabulous effort from Paul Hobbs. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2011)

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2009 vintage):
"Big yet nuanced, with tiers of cedar, dark berry, black licorice, gravel and road tar, this is intense, chewy and tannic, with an underlying measure of finesse and detail. Drink now through 2024." —J.L. (April 25, 2012)

93 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2008 vintage):
"This is a winner! Slightly better is the 4,000 case 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa cuvee. It offers up complex aromas of tobacco leaf, graphite, damp earth, blackberries and black currants, full-bodied power and more density, depth and structure than the Cross Barn. Already drinkable, it should age effortlessly for two decades.

One of California’s most renowned international wine consultants (he consults with 14 bodegas in Argentina, 3 wineries in Chile and also an estate in Armenia), Paul Hobbs is also a well-known consultant in California with his best-known clients being Merus, Stewart Cellars, Clos Pegase and Constant. All of Paul Hobbs offerings from the Sonoma Coast and the Russian River, which includes an impressive portfolio of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, will be reviewed in the February, 2011 issue in an extensive report on those viticultural areas. Hobbs produces one Napa Valley Pinot Noir from the Carneros region. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignons all look sensational. As a group, they come close to rivaling the brilliant success Paul Hobbs enjoyed in 2007. An early look at barrel samples of four 2009s suggests these are very strong efforts. Paul Hobbs did not make a 2009 Stagecoach or Hyde Cabernet because he had not harvested those Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards before the deluge of rain hit in mid-October. He felt there was too much mold in those vineyards." - Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Firm, tight and compact, with a trim mix of dried currant, berry and red and black licorice. This unfolds gracefully, showing a mineral and sage edge, before firming on the finish. Drink now through 2019. 4,045 cases made." –JL (June 30, 2011)

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):
"Inky ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of blackberry, cassis, black pepper and licorice. Broad, sweet and lush, with a strong spicy character to the juicy blackberry and spicecake flavors. As deep and fleshy as this is, it also delivers energetic cut. Very long on the finish, with silky, seamless tannins lending focus." - Josh Raynolds (May/June 2010)

3 Stars - Decanter (2008 vintage)
"Rich, spicy blackberry, roasted nut, red apple and mineral bouquet. Fresh, lively palate with good weight of fruit, smooth tannins and some complexity. Delicious. Drink 2012-2020."
–February 2012

93 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The least expensive effort is the opaque purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. A blockbuster, it offers up classic notes of charcoal, subtle smoke, black currants, black berries, lead pencil shavings, and earth. This deep, opulent, full-bodied Cabernet possesses terrific purity as well as length. It should drink well for 15+ years.

This is a brilliant portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignons from Paul Hobbs, one of the wine world’s top consultants whose own California projects are augmented by his superb work in Argentina. Paul Hobbs’ Syrahs, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs from outside of Napa will be reviewed in the next issue." - Robert Parker (12/2009)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Notable for its richness, intensity, focus and persistence, this full-bodied red shows spicy currant, black cherry and wild berry fruit that's supple and layered, yet light on its feet, with gentle tannins. Drink now through 2016. 5,653 cases made." –JL (Web Only 2010)

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2007 vintage):
"Youthful purple.  Potent, expressive aromas of cassis and cherry pie, with an intense spicy overtone.  Round but quite structured and assertive on the palate, offering sweet red and dark berry preserve flavors and a touch of bitter cherry.  Silky tannins add shape to the very long, spicy, penetrating finish.  Nicely structured without being at all hard. " - Josh Raynolds (May/June '11)
