Notes from the Winemaker:

Philippe Melka and Agustin Huneeus, Sr. teamed to combine the traditions of old world winemaking, the advancements of new world technology, and small lots from Washington State’s finest vineyards to craft this enticing red blend.

The 2009 Pirouette offers vibrant aromas of black cherry, violets, and incense that leap from the glass. Ripe currant flavors, hints of black olive, roasted coffee bean and vanilla nuances provide layers of depth, with excellent structure and polished tannins contributing to its lengthy finish.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"A four-grape, Bordeaux-style blend, this packs 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. Refined and elegant, it is precisely structured, with a firm herbal attack and a perfect blend of berry and cassis flavors. It’s dense, deep and compact, suggesting long aging ahead." - Paul Gregutt (Dec '12)

93+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
" Deep, bright medium ruby. Ripe, inviting aromas of cassis, black raspberry, blackberry and black licorice. Large-scaled, sweet and rich; wonderfully glossy in the mouth, with concentrated dark fruit flavors complemented by a strong element of sweet oak. This big boy finishes with lovely lingering perfume, excellent length and terrific tannic grip. This wine fermented in 400-liter wood barrels with wild yeasts. Today, this joint project of Augustin Huneeus Sr. and Philippe Melka is my early favorite among these 2009s." - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec '12)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This focused and generous red has cherry, cranberry and floral aromas and flavors, riding easily over refined tannins on the long finish. Shows intensity without great weight. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Best from 2014 through 2018. 1,415 cases made." –HS (Nov 30, 2012)

98 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2008 vintage):
"A stunning Pirouette—63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 9% Cab Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Full and magnificently rich, it is loaded with dense and thrilling fruit flavors of black cherry and cassis. A streak of iron and a hint of citrus keep the wine evolving through a long, beautifully balanced finish. Retasted after being open for 24 hours, the wine was as fresh and thrilling as on the first day." —P.G. (2/1/2012)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2008 vintage):
"The 2008 Pirouette is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec aged for 22 months in 70% new French oak. The wine was made by Agustin Hunneus, Sr,.and Philippe Melka. It offer slightly sweeter fruit and more complexity than the 100% varietal Dunn offering. Spicy, rich, and nicely proportioned, it will evolve for 2-3 years and provide prime drinking from 2013 to 2023." - Jay Miller (Aug 2011)

92+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Bright ruby-red. Explosive aromas of cassis, violet and menthol. Large-scaled, chewy and sweet, with dark fruit and strong spicy oak flavors shaped and extended by building tannins. According to Long Shadows resident winemaker Gilles Nicault, this wine, made jointly by Agustin Huneeus, Sr. and Philip Melka, underwent a long maceration. It will need at least several years of bottle aging to express itself." - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Oct '11)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This focused red is juicy with currant and plum fruit, shaded with smoke and spice overtones. Lingers easily on the refined finish against a light grip of tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2013 through 2018. 750 cases made." –HS (Nov 30, 2011)

93+ Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The 2007 Pirouette is produced by Agustin Huneeus, Sr. and Philippe Melka. It is a Bordeaux-style blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. It was aged in 70% new French oak for 22 months. Medium purple in color, it sports an incipiently complex nose of Asian spices, incense, violets, mineral, black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied, mouth-filling wine with ample ripe tannin, excellent balance, and 4-6 years of aging potential. Drink this pleasure-bent offering from 2014 to 2027." - Jay Miller (Aug 2010)

93 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2007 vintage):
"Good deep red-ruby. Raspberry, licorice and an enticing floral quality on the nose. Lush, smooth and sweet, but with lovely violet lift giving energy to the dark raspberry and cocoa powder flavors. Very broad, generous wine with sexy oak treatment. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and lovely length. Has the guts to age, but there's nothing hard about this beauty today. Part of this wine was fermented in 400-liter oak barrels." - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec '10)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Supple and inviting, from the nose of flowers and dark fruits, to the chocolatey tannins that lick the back of the throat, this is a fully-realized, smooth and most accessible red wine." — P.G. (12/31/2010)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Firm in texture, showing a real grip to the tannins around a surprisingly light core of raspberry and espresso flavors that point through the refined finish. Needs cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best after 2012. 1,684 cases made." –HS (Oct 31, 2010)

93 Points & "Cellar Selection" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2006 vintage):
"Concentrated and focused, it is expressive right out of the bottle, supple and clearly defined. Floral, darkly fruited, bursting with black cherry and cassis, detailed with licorice and stone, this excellent wine will be difficult to put away for aging, but well worth the effort." — P.G. (3/1/2010)

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2006 vintage):
"This rich, opulent red teems with currant, blackberry, plum and exotic spice flavors, weaving in touches of herb and tobacco as the finish sails easily on. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Best from 2012 through 2020. 1,733 cases made." –HS (Feb 28, 2010)

92 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):
"The 2006 Pirouette features winemakers Agustin Huneeus and Philippe Melka. It is composed of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 5% Syrah aged for 22 months in 70% new French oak. Saturated purple in color, it offers aromas of wood smoke, earth notes, spice box, plum, black currant, and blueberry. The wine is seamless upon entry with incipient complexity and the structure to evolve for 5-7 years. It will offer a drinking window extending 2015 to 2031." - Jay Miller (Oct 2009)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):
"($55; this joint project of Agustin Huneeus, Sr. and Philippe Melka is a blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% petit verdot, 6% cab franc and 5% syrah) Good deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of dark raspberry, mocha and spices, with a sweetness from the Taransaud barrels. Broad and sweet in the mouth: I would have guessed this had some residual sugar but I suspect the wine's glyceral quality is largely due to the fact that much of it was fermented in 400-liter barrels with native yeasts. Finishes with big, chewy tannins that build with air without losing their essential suavity. This wine, as well as the Chester Kidder, spends up to 42 days on its skins." - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec '09)

90 Points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (2006 vintage):
"From its inviting aromas of cherries, vanilla, mint and sweet smoke to its rounded and well-polished flavors, this nicely filled working juxtaposes Cabernet complexity with the come-hither aspects of well-made Merlot. Its nominal tannins firm where they should but in no way interfere with its very long-lasting fruit, and, even if certain to develop for several years, it already tempts drinking."Reviewed: December 2009
