Tasting Notes

Color: Deep purple, solid to the rim. Glossy and concentrated.
Aroma: Big, deep blackberry and blueberry notes, a dollop of ink, and a slight licorice note dominate the syrah high tones. Classical black fruit and woodsy aromas emerge from the firm cabernet sauvignon presence.
Palate: Blockbuster density and ripe black fruit. Satisfying palate intensity with dry long flavors framed by savvy-spicy syrah barrel maturation and Cabernet Sauvignon structure.

SAVANT is a wise and clever blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, two varieties that harmonize well in Paso Robles. Westside Paso produces syrah rich in color and forward fruit but often soft in tannins, resulting in very early approachability. Open top and barrel fermentation of the Syrah incorporates the new French oak framing as quickly as possible, and also helps integrate the fruit and mid-palate weight of the variety. Reserve quality Cabernet Sauvignon is used to give the blend structure, ageability, and length on the finish.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2009 vintage):
"A delightful wine, one of Justin’s best in quite some time. The blend is Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and fruit is the star, in the form of ripe, lush blackberries and currants. You’ll also find complex notes of grilled meats, chocolate, herbs and spices, wrapped into a perfectly soft, delectable texture. Drink now–2015." — S.H. (4/1/2012)

Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage)
"Tight and focused on red berry and plum flavors, with touches of spice, cedar and mineral. This is medium- to full-bodied and delicate. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2016. 2,000 cases made." –JL (2011)

Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Mainly Syrah, with Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was made with free run juice, which gives it very pure, strong fruit flavors and almost none of the earthiness you might want for balance in a complex red wine. It’s also very new oaky. The result is massive cherry, raspberry, cola and bacon flavors that are jammy and sweet." — S.H. (4/1/2011)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2007 vintage):

"This blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a drop of Malbec, presumably for color and body, represents a big step forward for Justin. It has the structure and impressive dryness of a fine wine, with pure, deep flavors of black currants and cedar. Delicious and elegant, it should hold in the bottle for 3–5 years." - S.H. (3/1/2010)\

Best of Class, Gold Medal - Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition (2007 vintage)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine ('06 vintage):
"Shows the cherry, leather and pepper flavors of Syrah, along with Cabernet Sauvignon’s deeper black currants. The combination is a dry, full-bodied red wine whose rich tannins call for grilled meats. Give it a few hours of decanting." - S.H. (10/1/2009)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('04 vintage):
Serious, complex, and profound is the 2004 Savant Proprietary Red, a blend of equal parts Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of spicy oak, sweet creme de cassis, smoke, espresso roast, and chocolate. Long, textured, medium to full-bodied, soft, and opulent, it can be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.
