About this Wine:

Despite some early heat during veraison, the remainder of the 2009 vintage was characterised by cooler than average temperatures, thus ensuring a long slow ripening period. This allowed flavours to develop at their own pace and gave our winemaking team some room to move in order to determine the exact optimum time to pick. The resulting wines from the vintage have clearly benefited and are showing a real depth of flavour and balance.

Our 2009 Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz is designed to reflect the soft, elegant palate of Schild Estate’s viticultural home in the southern portions of the Barossa Valley. It has been sourced from a number of carefully selected vineyard parcels in and around Lyndoch, picked in the cool of the night and processed in open fermenters at the winery before being matured in a combination of French and American oak.

COLOUR:
Vibrant, deep rich red

BOUQUET:
A nose of ripe cherries, plums, dark chocolate and Christmas cake spice.

PALATE:
A middle palate of vibrant, dark berry fruit is supported by clearly defined yet elegant tannin framework and some balanced acidity to provide structure and length.

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine
An expressive Shiraz, bursting with dark plum and bright blueberry notes, joined by hints of roasted meat and spice. The finish rolls along with an airy, open texture that lets the flavors sail. Has depth and pinpoint balance. Drink now through 2019.—H.S.

Rank #7 Top 100 Wines of 2010, 94 Points & "Smart Buys" - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"This big, smooth wine is polished, ripe and complex, offering roasted meat and walnut accents to its black cherry, blackberry, tobacco and licorice aromas and flavors. Lingers appealingly on the expansive finish. Drink now through 2020. 5,000 cases imported." –HS (12/15/2010)

90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):
"Opaque ruby.  Heady, intensely perfumed bouquet displays cherry-cola, dark berries, olive and violet, along with a smoky overtone.  Deeply pitched and sappy but energetic, offering pungent cherry and cassis flavors lifted by zesty acidity.  A note of boysenberry comes up on the finish, which leaves notes of mint and cracked pepper behind.  For a rich wine this shows very good focus and vivacity." - Josh Raynolds (Sept/Oct '11)

Rank #43 Top 100 Wines of 2009, 92 Points & "Smart Buys" -
Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Polished and generous, offering a racy mouthful of tobacco-accented cherry and black currant fruit that finishes with an edge of dried sage, licorice and fresh cream. This lingers impressively, showing amazing depth. Drink now through 2017. 8,200 cases made." - HS (10/15/2009)

The Schild Barossa Shiraz 2004 scored 96 pts from Wine Spectator and became one of the most sought after $30 bottles of red wine in history. The following 2005 vintage was ranked #16 on Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines!
