Notes From The Winemaker:

NAME ORIGIN
The names given to Spring Valley Vineyard wines are a tribute to the family members who have succeeded in farming the same land where the vineyard and winery now flourish. This Cabernet Sauvignon blend’s name stems from Frederick Corkrum, son to Uriah and father to Shari, who grew up in Spring Valley.

A FAMILY TRADITION
Following the tradition of Uriah, Frederick, and Nina Lee Corkrum, Shari Corkrum Derby and her husband Dean Derby continue to operate the wheat fields, vineyard, and winery. The hard work, traditional values, and deep family ties that have kept the ranch going for over 100 years are mirrored in Spring Valley Vineyard’s signature offerings.

WINEMAKING
Spring Valley Vineyard fruit is hand-picked, hand-sorted, and gently de-stemmed by gravity. During the 10-20 day fermentation, each tank is tasted daily until pressing decision using wooden cage basked presses. In keeping with Spring Valley tradition, hand punchdowns occur twice a day until the end of alcoholic fermentation. The wine is transferred by pump into barrel for secondary fermentation, and then gets racked and blended together several times for clarity.  Finally, the different lots are blended to create our six distinctive labels.

Alcohol - 15.3%
Blend - 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec

What Does It Taste Like?

"This New World-styled Cabernet Sauvignon blend is a highly structured, fruit-driven wine, what in France would be called “Un Vin Charpente,” or a wine with strong structure like a roof. A nose of candied plum, blackberry jam, and flowers leads into a huge, soft palate, with Cabernet Franc adding texture and vibrancy to the big, fruity Cabernet Sauvignon." - Serge Laville, Winemaker

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Dense and juicy, this is packed with disarmingly delicious currant, plum, roasted meat and mineral flavors, and when the finish kicks in this shows elegance and finesse. Offers power and personality, with deft balance. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2014 through 2020." —H.S. (Oct 5, 2011)

90+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2008 Frederick Red Wine is made up of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. Spice box, Asian spices, cassis, and blackberry aromas are followed by a Bordeaux-like, relatively forward, savory, full-bodied wine that will deliver optimum drinking from 2012 through 2020.

Spring Valley Vineyard produces wine from 100% estate-grown fruit, a relative rarity in Washington. The winery is owned by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates but the Derby family from whom they purchased the brand continues to own the vineyards." - Jay Miller (Aug 2011)

91+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2007 vintage):
"The 2007 Frederick Cabernet Sauvignon Blend is made up of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot aged for 21 months in 62% new French oak. Purple/black in color, it sports an enticing perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, violets, espresso, black currant, and blackberry. Full-bodied, dense, and youthful, it requires another 3-4 years of cellaring. It will offer prime drinking from 2015 to 2032." - Jay Miller (8/2010)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2006 vintage):
"Rich and chewy, with a brightness to the cherry and mulberry fruit that balances well against hints of wet earth and cedar as the finish persists expressively. There's nice balance and length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and others. Best from 2010 through 2016. 3,000 cases made." –HS (6/15/2009)
