Notes from the Winemaker:

This Cabernet Sauvignon comes largely from blocks on the lower and middle sections of the FAY vineyard, which give the wine its classic red-fruit tones and aromatic top notes. About 20% of the blend is sourced from the eastern blocks of FAY, which tend to be more powerful and lend structure to the wine. When the various lots are blended and aged in French oak barrels, the resulting wine gives us the classic expression that is a hallmark of our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, “an iron fist in a velvet glove.”

The FAY vineyard is where the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars story began. In 1969, founder Warren Winiarski tasted Nathan Fay’s homemade 1968 Cabernet Sauvignon from his vineyard – the first planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in the area, which would later become the Stags Leap District. Admiring the wine’s structure, supple fruit and balance, Warren purchased an adjoining ranch soon after, now known as S.L.V. Then, in 1986, he bought Nathan’s vineyard and named it FAY in his honor. Today, FAY, along with S.L.V., remains the heart and soul of the winery estate.

The 2008 FAY offers sweet floral aromas along with the signature bright cherry note of the vineyard. Red plum and black cherry flavors combine with hints of vanilla, forest floor, and spice on the palate. The wine has great fruit concentration and fine grained tannins that lead to a long, plum-spiced finish.

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Dark ruby/purple-hued with sweet black currant, spring flower, cedar and subtle earthy notes, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay Vineyard Estate is a classic Napa Cabernet with both elegance and complexity. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-14 years.

Dramatic improvements are clearly underway at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, which was sold to a consortium led by Tuscany’s Piero Antinori in 2007. Antinori brought in well-known consultant Renzo Cotarella to improve the quality and, hopefully, get this winery back to the lofty heights it achieved in the seventies and early eighties. They seem to be well on their way, which is good news for consumers. This is a large estate of 104 acres, all situated as one giant block of vineyards in the southern part of the Stags Leap appellation. The change in ownership and winemaking staff shows progressive improvement with each vintage starting with 2007. The 2009s look to be their best wines to date. As for the 2007 reds, normally four cuvees are produced, all based on Cabernet Sauvignon, including the Cask 23, which comes from the best lots from the Fay and S.L.V. estate vineyards after fermentations are completed. The most impressive Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ offerings made since the 1985 vintage are the three 2009s I was permitted to taste from barrel." - Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

92-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('09 Vintage):
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay Vineyard Estate offers an opaque purple color, great fruit, wonderful breadth of flavor on the mid-palate and a long finish with silky tannins. This beauty is very perfumed and harmonious." - Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine ('07 Vintage):
"This is a very strongly flavored Cabernet, most notable for the intensity of its blackberry, cherry and raspberry fruit. It’s almost sweet, an impression furthered by the caramel of toasted oak, although in reality the wine is fully and appropriately dry. Delicious and flashy, it should evolve in the bottle over the next dozen years."  — S.H.  (4/1/2011)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
('07 Vintage):
"The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay Vineyard Estate is an outstanding effort made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a 67-acre estate vineyard in Stags Leap. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by sweet aromas of plums, Allspice, licorice, black currants, cherries and flowers. Medium-bodied and elegant with a nice texture and silky tannins, it should drink well for 10-12 years." - Robert Parker (Dec 2010)

4 Stars & Highly Recommended - Decanter Magazine
('07 Vintage):
"Cedar, bramble, oak, spice and pepper on the nose. Refined and fresh with excellent balance and ripe grippy tannins. Stylish, harmonious and long. Drink: 2011-2020. (Feb 2011)"

91 Points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines (2005 vintage):
"The mildly leathery, coffee and loamy earth traits that mark all of the SLWC siblings is again evident here, but this wine conveys a bit more fruity depth and thus moves to the head of the clan. Fairly full-bodied and pleasantly supple in feel, it is at once both accessible and rather deep, and, if it has tannins in place for five years of growth, it is already inviting and will partner nicely with savory meats in the mid-term. Lacking the bombast of the bigger wines in this review, the SLWC Fay offering makes its way with balance and richness."
