Notes From the Winemaker:

The Tablas Creek Vineyard Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc 2009 is a blend of three estate-grown varietals, propagated from budwood cuttings from the Château de Beaucastel estate. Roussanne provides the core richness, minerality, and flavors of honey and spice, while Grenache Blanc adds green apple and anise flavors, a lush mouthfeel and bright acids. Picpoul Blanc completes the blend, adding a saline minerality and tropical notes.

The 2009 vintage was our third consecutive drought year, with yields further reduced by April frosts. Berries and clusters were small, with excellent concentration. Ripening over the summer was gradual and our white harvest complete except for a few Roussanne lots at the time of a major rainstorm on October 13th. Crop sizes were 10% smaller than 2008 and 30% lower than usual. The low yields and gradual ripening resulted in wines with an appealing lushness, rich texture and gentle minerality. Grenache Blanc was harvested between September 14th and 24th, followed by Picpoul between September 28th and October 11th and Roussanne between September 18th and November 2nd.

The grapes for our Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc were grown on our 120-acre certified organic estate vineyard.

The fruit was whole cluster pressed, and fermented with native yeasts. The Roussanne was fermented in a balance of stainless steel fermenters, 60-gallon oak barrels, and one 1200-gallon foudre. The Grenache Blanc was fermented partially in stainless steel and also in one foudre, and the Picpoul Blanc was fermented in small neutral oak and stainless steel barrels. All the wines went through malolactic fermentation. The lots were selected and blended in April, and bottled in July 2010.

The 2009 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc shows a rich, lifted nose, very spicy, with aromas of ginger, tangerine, asian pear, beeswax and herbs. The mouth shows classic Roussanne flavors of honey and spice, with a little tropicality lurking behind, and a long, dry finish with toffee and pear notes. We suggest that this wine will benefit from short-term cellaring, and drink well from mid-2011 through the end of the decade.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Aromas of Braziian limes and lemon with flowers. Lemon crud. Rich. Full-bodied, with wonderful dense and agile palate of dried apples, mango and figs. Love the finish. Caramel, honey and lemons. Rousanne really comes out. 62% Rousanne, 26% Grenache Blanc and 12% Picpoul Blanc. Drink now or hold." (Oct 3, 2011)

94 Points - The Rhone Report:

"Impressive and a serious white, the 2009 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel is a blend of 62% Roussanne, 26%  Grenache Blanc, and 12% Picpoul Blanc, that’s aged in a combination of stainless steel, small barrels, and foudre. The nose boasts intense aromatics of pear and baked apple fruits, herbs, honeysuckle, and edgy, rocky minerality. Oozing extract and concentration on the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied with a serious, structured feel, beautiful balance, and a very long, clean finish. This is superb now, but should also age very well." (November 2010)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Vivid gold. Pungent, mineral and herb-accented aromas of dried pit fruits, mango, honey and lemon curd. A smoky note comes up with air, along with a hint of anise. Then dusty, dry and sappy on the palate, with impressive intensity to the flavors of ripe orchard fruits, citrus peel and licorice. Finishes firm-edged and stony, with excellent persistence. A serious, soil-driven white wine that was raised in all neutral oak." - Josh Raynolds (Nov/Dec '10)

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The flagship 2009 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc is 62% Roussanne, 26% Grenache Blanc and 12% Picpoul Blanc. It reveals lovely delineation, freshness and verve. Scents of white peaches, flowers, minerals come together beautifully on the layered finish. The 2009 Esprit has lovely vibrancy for the vintage, mostly owing to the inclusion of 12% Picpoul, which adds much needed acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016." - Antonio Galloni (Aug 2011)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('08 Vintage):
"The flagship white is the 2008 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc, a blend of 65% Roussanne, 30% Grenache blanc, and a rarity of 5% Picpoul. This is really great stuff in 2008. The wine displays plenty of honeyed citrus, spring flowers, white peach, apricot, quince, and loads of wet rocks, giving a steely definition to its opulent, full-bodied, yet fresh flavors. This is a tour de force in dry white and Rhone Ranger blends. It’s impossible to know how long it will last, but I would drink it sooner rather than later." -Robert Parker (Aug 2010)

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ('08 Vintage):
"68% roussanne, 22% grenache blanc and 10% picpoul) Light, bright gold. Pungently floral aromas of lime, lemongrass and green apple, with notes of dusty minerals and honey. Deep citrus flavors are firmed by gentle chalk and white pepper qualities and show a strong tangerine note. Tangy and refreshing on the finish, leaving behind sweet citrus and mineral notes. This wine is really lively for a southern Rhone white blend." -Josh Raynolds (Nov/Dec '09)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ('07 vintage):
"The prodigious 2007 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc (68% Roussanne, 22% Grenache Blanc, and 10% Picpoul) is one of the finest white Rhone Rangers I have tasted. A beautiful bouquet of orange blossoms, honeysuckle, lemon zest, quince, and white flowers is followed by a full-bodied wine with stunning concentration, layered flavors, and good underlying minerality as well as acidity. This sensational wine should provide immense pleasure over the next 3-5 years." -Robert Parker, Aug '09

92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ('07 vintage):
"Pale chartreuse color. Deep, smoky bouquet combines mango, pear, lees and dried flowers. Lightweight and precise, with fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Deep in flavor but elegant, finishing with good mineral lift and bite. This weighs in at a civilized 13.5% alcohol." -Josh Raynolds, Dec '08
