Terry Theise, importer to Donnhoff, Selbach-Oster, and many other properties, has been importing German wine for nearly forty years. Because he is now so known on that side of the Atlantic, he gets introduced to many families that were once producing wine but now don’t. Yet, they often have a vast collection of the past estate’s wines. He’s been doing this for years, I am only now getting hip to the trend.

So here is how I believe this goes. Grandfather makes wine some 40 years ago. Dad, mom, son, daughter, don’t follow in his footsteps. The winery remains after Granddad retires but the fruit now all gets sold off. A nice little money generator for the new generations, plus a place to gather as a family. Years go by, wine is drunk from the family but at family levels of volume, not commercial levels of volume. And then, something happens – the estate needs to be sold, or word gets out that the past winery still has wine. Terry gets a call, asks to taste some wine, and writes a check. For the past winery and current family members, it’s a nice remembrance of Granddad. For you and I, its 40-year-old Riesling at an amazing price!

What’s it taste like? Pure, with a leaner cut on the fruit weight and feels, now at 40 years old, totally dry. There is a deep richness of age here but it hasn’t lost a spring in its step. The Germans have a word, ferne, which means the richness of age in a flavor or smell. Like our patina, but to flavor sensations. This wine has much ferne. And after that, it tastes of Erdener Treppchen – always to me an earthy, grounded and powerful Riesling that separates it from its twin, Uzinger Wurzgarten. It is, at 40, not quite a baby, but rather a strapping and delicious wine.
