Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Dark ruby.  Dark berries, olive and black pepper on the nose and palate.  Firm and tangy, with good clarity and a late note of candied licorice that carries through the finish.  Easygoing and ready to drink." - Josh Raynolds (Nov/Oct '11)

The 2009 Big Guy blend is strongly influenced by Syrah from the Canterbury Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills.  This vineyard yields grapes with ripe, luscious, sunny fruit flavors and a delicious mouthfeel. Cabernet sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals are blended with the Syrah to create a wine with lively fruit aromas, rich, ripe fruit flavors on the palate and soft, supple tannins on the persistent finish.  The addition of Syrah makes this wine approachable at an earlier age, while still having a structure that will allow the wine to develop for several years. A medium-bodied wine, with rich, complex flavors of fruit and toasty oak integrated with supple tannins, this delicious wine is a delightful accompaniment to any occasion.

As is typical of Petite Sirah the color is almost black and one is tempted to use it as ink rather than as a beverage.  The low pH of the 2009 wine gives the color a bright youthful hue.  The aromas of cassis and jamy blackberry come with an added dimension of concentration and density.  The 2009 vintage may be our biggest Petite Sirah to date and this wine just soaked up the new French Oak, and yet the bouquet of mocha and dark chocolate takes a backseat to the intensity of the 2009’s intense fruit.  Big creamy mouth coating flavors of ripe sweet boysenberry and blackberries are balanced by creamy French oak.  The texture is full of thick viscous tannins, and the finish is long and lingers well after swallowing the wine.  I am guilty of letting the alcohol creep up a bit on this wine, but it is well integrated.  Be forewarned this is one big rich red wine.

"The
object of Pleiades Old Vines is to be delicious, delight the jaded,
irritate the Wine Police, and generally go well with anything red wine
goes well with. This twenty-first edition, bottled in August of 2011,
includes Sangiovese, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, and
Marsanne, to name but a few. Fragrant and voluptuous when first
released, it will become far more subtle and complex with age, as of
course we all will: but such restraint may just be too much to ask..."

"A very good, even noble Petite Sirah whose classic structure expresses the variety’s personality in an elegant way. Tannic and dry, it’s a big, fruity wine, with notes of blackberries, coffee, dark chocolate and tar. Now–2013. " — S.H.  (10/1/2010)

Petite Sirah is known for its deep color and powerful flavors and
this offering fits the bill. This wine has an inky black-purple color
with a nose of blackberry, oak and earth. A solid blackberry fruit core
is framed by earth and spice flavors, with tannins coming in on the
finish.

"Inky purple. Sexy aromas of boysenberry, olive, violet and smoky herbs; smells like it came from a fancy neighborhood in the northern Rhone. Creamy and sweet on entry, offering broad dark berry compote flavors and building smokiness. The floral quality gains strength with air and carries through an impressively long and juicy finish. Suavely blends sweetness and spiciness." - Josh Raynolds (May/June '10)

Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah are artfully blended to create a symphonic eruption of aromas and flavors in the glass. Ripe plums dominate the nose along with smoky tar, cedar, cigar box and toffee nuances. The big fruit offering on the palate of juicy flavors are reminiscent of blueberry, plums and hints of black pepper. Full of depth and concentration the wine finishes with medium tannins and a lingering finish.
