Stephen Tanzer (2013 Vintage):
"(Domingo Vicente was Nicolas Catena's father; fermented in used _foudres): Bright red with ruby highlights. Blackberry, blueberry, licorice and a touch of charred oak on the slightly rustic nose. A more medicinal style, perhaps owing to the Petit Verdot acidity, conveying a slightly unyielding, even tart, quality to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Finishes with strong tannins and very good length. From 90-year-old vines, planted to the mix of Malbec and Petit Verdot that was typical in the 1920s." - Stephen Tanzer (Mar 2016)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This is quintessential Argentine Malbec. Aromas of roasted black fruits and smoke transition to a toasty, oaky palate with a spectrum of flavors ranging from herbal to jammy berry. In between are notes of tobacco, spice and molasses. Drink now through 2018." - Michael Schachner (12/1/2014)

"The complex violet, clove and savory nose doesn’t leave you in any doubt, and the deep and concentrated palate confirms that you’re right. Serious tannins at the long finish, but somehow it manages to be silky. Drink in 2020." - (March 29, 2018)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Barolo Margheria, however, moves us over to the Serralunga d’Alba township where power and structure are the name of the game. This wine shows big bones with firmly rooted tannins and a bold, fleshy quality of fruit. Black currant, chopped mint and licorice are woven tightly within the fabric of the wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028." – Monica Larner (Jun 2013)

"Very dense and powerful with a tight palate of blue fruit and raspberry undertones. Salty with wonderful length and intensity. A blend of malbec from Nicasia Vineyard in Altamira and Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary. Drink in 2022 but so great now." - (May 20, 2016)

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Doctor Nicolas Catena always liked Cabernet Sauvignon so the wine that carries his name has a greater percentage of the noble Bordeaux grape. The 2010 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Malbec sourced from La Piramide, Domingo, Adrianna and Nicasia. The fresh and balanced 2010 produced good ripeness of the fruit but the acidity was also great and the wine finished with 6.5 grams of acidity and a natural pH of 3.5, as the grapes are selected from cold soils. The first vintage was 1997, but this has to be one of their finest. This has the intensity of the Catena Alta Cabernet and the verticality and austerity of the Adrianna Malbec. It has very good acidity and intensity, while it has some velvety tannins. For a minute I was trying to remember the varietals as the sense of place, the freshness and the earthy sensations clearly take over. A superb bottle of wine. This is a wine to age. Drink 2016-2023." - Luis Gutierrez (Apr 2014)

95 Points - James Suckling:
"Complex aromas of dark berry, shaved chocolate and minerals. Full-bodied, bright and fruity with a beautiful balance and length. It's so polished and gorgeous. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% malbec." - June 2nd, 2015

2009 VINTAGE

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Zapata is from selected vines marked by a red sash in order to raise the wine with meticulous care. It is 10% whole cluster and 90% whole berry fruit that is aged in 80% new French oak for 24 months. It is pieced together from a mind-boggling 210 separate row micro-vinifications of multifarious lots and harvest times and is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Malbec. It has a spellbinding bouquet that exudes minerality, as if crushed stones had been sprinkled into the black fruit. With continued aeration, there are scents of oyster shell and black olive. The palate is full-bodied, with immense structure and backbone. The acidity is beautifully judged with filigree tannins that render the finish so elegant and refined, with notes of blackberry, soy, black plum and that stony aftertaste. Magnificent. Drink 2014-2035." -Neal Martin (Oct 2012)
