You are here: Home > James Suckling's Top 100 Wines

This year's list of my Top 100 Wines focuses mainly on key themes I found during my tastings and reports on JamesSuckling.com over the last 10 months, including the great 2010 Brunellos, exciting 2012 super Tuscans, top Spanish reds and whites, as well as the superb wines of Chile, Argentina and Alsace. It also includes a number of great wines from New Zealand, Australia, and Champagne tasted by contributing editor Nick Stock.

In all, JamesSuckling.com reviewed close to 9,000 wines to create this formidable list of the Top 100 Wines in 2015. I tasted more than 7,500 wines myself and visited various regions in France, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Spain, and the United States. I was on the road for about six months this year visiting wineries and wine producers. I tried to include wines in the list that were released on the market this year; therefore, I didn't list some highly-scored wines that I reviewed, including barrel samples such as 2014 Bordeaux and Burgundy, and wines aging in bottle in cellars for future release, such as 2010 Brunello di Montalicno Riservas. The later will be considered for my 2016 Top 100 Wines list.

This year, I tried to focus on relative value and quantity for the first 10 wines in the list of my Top 100 wines. All the wines can be found for $70 a bottle or less, according to Wine-Searcher. And there appears to be stock in the marketplace. I rated all the wines at least 96 points.

"A stunning wine for this vintage although it’s still a bit shy on the nose (more spice than fruit showing than now). There’s wet earth, too, but on the palate it’s bursting with ripe yet subtle flavors. Very long and complex finish that goes on and on." - (Feb 2017)

"Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plums and flowers. Licorice and mushroom It's full body, with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured yet shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal. Better in 2016." - (December 1st, 2014)

"Aromas of warm stones, dark fruits and walnuts follow to a full body, soft tannins and a savory finish. This shows ripe fruit and salty undertones that give it a wonderful juiciness. It's dense and tight now but will give so much pleasure in the future. Best ever from here. Drink or hold." - (January 19th, 2015)

98+ Points - Antonio Galloni:
"The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions." - Antonio Galloni (Jul 2018)

"This is an extremely intense and dense Redigaffi yet it remains lively and agile. Full body and powerful tannins that are polished and long. It goes on for minutes. So compacted and structured but always reserved. Acid balance is just right. Can't wait to taste it in bottle. Made from organic grapes." - (Oct 2017)

“Loads of dark tobacco aromas with blackcurrants and black olives. Boysenberries, too. Full to medium body, ultra-fine tannins and lots of flavors of smoke, dried roasted chillis, black truffles, mushrooms and fruit. Bright acidity on the finish. Sexy and subtle austerity. Alluring. Very approachable now but better in 2021." - (January 27, 2017)

98+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Very deep inky-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is incredibly intense and impactful on the nose, revealing notes of crushed black cherries, blackberries and fresh black currants with underlying notions of charcoal, sautéed herbs, black soil, chargrilled meat and pencil lead, plus a waft of violets. Very full-bodied, very rich and wonderfully concentrated, the wall of fruit is well matched by a firm structure of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length and depth." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (31st Oct 2017)

97 Points - James Suckling:
"This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Bâtard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006. Drink now." (Jan 2018)

"Wonderful floral aromas with perfumed roses plus hints of blackcurrants and spearmint. Full-bodied and so powerful and muscular but always showing the brightness and beauty of fruit. Winemakers say this reminds them of the 1978, their first year. It certainly has the structure — "those tannins" as they put it. Finish is so impressive with tar, iron and spices. Available in September 2017. Try in 2023." - (May 22, 2017)

97 Points - Antonio Galloni:
"The 2006 Dom Pérignon is a beautifully balanced, harmonious Dom Pérignon that strikes an incredibly appealing stylistic middle ground. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2006 shows off fabulous intensity in a style that brings together the ripeness of 2002 with the greater sense of verve and overall freshness that is such a signature of the 2004. Bass notes and a feeling of phenolic grip on the finish recall the 2003, as the Pinot Noir is particularly expressive today. After an irregular summer that saw elevated temperatures in July followed by cooler, damp conditions in August, more favorable weather returned in September, pushing maturation ahead and leading to a long, protracted harvest. The 2006 falls into the family of riper, more voluptuous Dom Pérignons, but without veering into the level of opulence seen in vintages such as 2002." - Antonio Galloni (October 2015)
