92 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Opaque violet color.  An intensely perfumed bouquet displays dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, vanilla and woodsmoke.  Lush, palate-coating blackberry and boysenberry flavors are complicated by notes of licorice and candied violet.  Shows very good intensity on the gently tannic finish, which clings with noteworthy tenacity." - Josh Raynolds (Nov/Oct '11)

"Neprica is an awesome blend of Negroamaro, Primitivo and Cabernet Sauvignon from southern Italy that offers an unbeatable price versus quality ratio. This rising star of Puglia would pair with meats, pasta or aged cheese and offers clean aromas of ripe fruit, spice and leather." — M.L. (7/1/2011)

This classic, versatile Zinfandel is sourced from an older, well established vineyard in Windsor where the fruit is exposed to a bit of morning fog. Consistent with previous vintages, the 2009 displays a deep color, lush raspberry fruit highlighted by hints of vanilla, and a long seductive finish.

Notes from the winemaker:

Like many works of art, the 2010 Painter Bridge Zinfandel was designed with an eye towards good composition. The fruit for this wine comes from four Paso Robles Zinfandel blocks and is blended with a wonderfully soft and spicy Syrah, which offers fruit and length, and a bit of Petite Sirah for additional body and palate structure. Each lot of Zinfandel was fermented separately, extracting the nuances of the individual vineyard blocks and drawing out a supple texture. Painter Bridge Zinfandel is awash with the gorgeous red fruit characters of the Zinfandel grape, and has been stylized to accent the delicate fruit without overpowering it with too much oak.

Since 1985, Zinfandel has been our flagship varietal. The Ballistic Zinfandel represents a perfect example of what Paso Robles Zinfandel should taste like. We scour the Paso Robles appellation to find the finest vineyards, actually 27 in all, including many that are over 60 years old. Always included in this blend in great proportions is the Dusi Vineyard, a 75 year old, dry farmed, head trained gem that produces some of the finest Paso Robles has to offer.

From these 27 vineyards, we are able to craft the perfect Zin, with gobs of rich fruit and jam, and just the right amount of pepper and spice. One of our favorite food pairing wines, match this with just about everything!

"You could use this as a teaching tool for classic Sonoma County Zinfandel. It’s full-bodied, dry and spicy, with briary flavors of wild berries, mocha, tobacco, leather and exotic spices. More importantly, it's absolutely delicious. The grapes come from Seghesio's best vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. … An astonishing value. Editors' Choice."

Can a bottle of wine help you get the girl? Winemaker Chip Forsythe, his brother AJ and his friend Brandon Allen think so, arguing that it worked for Thomas Jefferson--or at least it did in their offbeat version of history. Chip got his degree in winemaking and viticulture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, locally referred to as SLO (hence the winery name), making wine under a bridge next to the winery he was working for and selling it to the kids in the dorms for extra cash. The 2010 Sexual Chocolate was made from 70-year-old Howell Mountain Zin from Chip's college roommate's dad's organically-farmed ranch in Napa, and young, warm climate Santa Barbara Syrah (25%) that Chip planted while he was in school. It tastes like chocolate covered cherries, with super supple tannins and a plush texture. This isn't a wine to sit and ponder, but a fun bottle for drinking tonight.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Bright, full red-ruby. Spicy, sweet nose offers red fruits, violet and licorice. Fresh, suave and smooth on the palate, with bright flavors similar to the aromas and a delicate complicating herbal nuance. Finishes with bright acids, soft tannins and good length." - Ian D'Agata (Mar/Apr '11)
