Artisan Wine Depot Price: $13.99

This vintage, our tenth, is lighter and more delicate than the '04 and '05.

It is creamy and rich with deep dark cherry fruit. Smooth, full and bright. A lingering finish and a hint of smoke end your glass of this wine.

It is always a pleasant surprise how much this vineyard can vary from year to year and still always be a joy to drink. A delightful year for Carignane.

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2007 Nita is composed of 45% Garnacha, 35% Carinena, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Syrah aged in tank. Cherry red in color, it exhibits a fragrant bouquet of crushed stone, underbrush, spice box, black cherry, and blueberry jam. Silky-textured, forward, succulent, and well-balanced, this charming effort can be enjoyed now but should provide pleasure for another five years. - Jay Miller (Feb 2009)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2004 Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Arruga flows onto the palate in stunning style, as layers of dark fruit, flowers, minerals, licorice and spices blossom. This generous, full-bodied red possesses impressive length and tons of balance. The wine remains quite primary and is likely to develop additional complexity in bottle. It is a wonderful effort. The Arruga is fermented in cement tanks and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.

These are the first wines I have tasted from Sardus Pater, a cooperative located on the Sant’Antioco islands, just off the southwest coast of Sardinia. The winery was founded in 1949 and today counts over 300 members. Consulting oenologist Riccado Cotarella oversees winemaking. His approach is often very much felt in the wines, yet I often get a sense that with a lighter touch in the cellar and a more transparent expression of variety and terroir these wines might very well reach a higher level. The raw materials certainly seem to be available, as the estate’s top reds are made from ancient, pre-phylloxera vineyards. This a beautiful set of wines from an emerging property readers should keep an eye on."
Domaine de Beaucastel
Domaine de Beaucastel "Coudoulet de Beaucastel" Cotes du Rhone 2009 (Southern Rhone, France) - [RP 89-91]
Retail Price: $39.00
Artisan Wine Depot Price: $23.99
You save $15.01!

89-91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2009 Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet red is just a notch behind its brilliant 2007 counterpart and could turn out to be just as good. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue in addition to abundant aromas of framboise, black cherries, truffles, herbs, grilled steak and meat blood. Spicy, peppery, rich and medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, this beautiful, reasonably priced wine should drink well for 10-12+ years." - Robert Parker (Oct 2010)

Broc Cellars "Carbonic" Carignane Alexander Valley 2010 (Sonoma County, California)
Retail Price: $25.00
Artisan Wine Depot Price: $21.99

This is the second vintage of carignane from an ancient, 120-year-old vineyard in Alexander Valley. As is the case with similar old vine plantings found in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, these head trained bush vines are planted on their own roots and farmed without irrigation (dry-farming), a practice that forces the root system to plunge deep into rocky soils in search of water. Advocates of dry-farming believe that it helps build complexity into a wine, and we certainly agree. For 2010, we leaned more towards the Roussillon than Beaujolais, and slightly decreased the amount of carbonic fermentation in the final blend. Like ’09, the 2010 Carbonic Carignane is bursting with vivid red fruit aromas and bright berry flavor, however it feels richer across the palate, with greater mineral depth and a bit more weight. As always, the wine was fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts with no additives. Finished alcohol is 14.3%. 425 cases produced.

"This is fleshy and smoky, with enticing mesquite, tobacco and iron notes weaving through the large core of fig and blackberry fruit. The long, smoldering finish has some serious grip in reserve. Grenache, Syrah and Carignan. Drink now through 2013. 2,500 cases made." –JM (2011

91-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The color of the 2009 Seguret Grande Reserve (a blend of 65% concrete-aged Grenache and 35% oak barrel-aged Syrah from 60-year-old vines) is not dissimilar from the Syrah cuvee, a deep ruby/purple with blue tints. It boasts a stunning bouquet of kirsch, blueberries, blackberries, incense and spice box. Full-bodied and rich, this is a fabulous example of what can be achieved in the outlying Cotes du Rhone-Villages appellations. It ranks alongside the brilliant 2007s produced by Domaine de Mourchon. It should drink well for at least a decade." - Robert Parker (Oct 2010)

The 2009 Carignane has a deep purple color with bright ruby hues.  Aromatically the wine offers up a big dollop of red and black raspberry fruit with a dusty briary edge.  The bouquet has taken a bit of a backseat to the succulent fruit but still provides a mild oaky nuance. On the pallet juicy black raspberry, plum and cassis fruit flavors flow into rich luscious wine where the tannins are mature and the finish is soft and elegant.

91 Points & "Good Value" - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine:
"Ms. Shelton continues her string of great success with this Zinfandel from Mendocino County. It offers up both ripeness and fruit, but its ripeness results in volume, not in excess, and in the wine's aromas and flavors are spot on in their delivery of varietal berries kissed with just the right amounts of enriching vanilla-bean oakiness. Full in body, supple and built on a base of youthful tannins, this wine finds perfect balance for its style and is sure to please for many years to come." Reviewed: January 2011
