91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a drop of Malbec, presumably for color and body, represents a big step forward for Justin. It has the structure and impressive dryness of a fine wine, with pure, deep flavors of black currants and cedar. Delicious and elegant, it should hold in the bottle for 3–5 years." - S.H. (3/1/2010)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - 90 Points:
"60% malbec with 20% each cabernet and syrah; aged 18 months in new French barriques Densely packed and deep, with sweet flavors of black fruits and bitter chocolate perked up by herbs and licorice. Has the stuffing to support its obvious oak element. In a rather powerful and tactile style, finishing broad and sweet, with serious structure and thrust." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb 2010)

Chakana Estate Selection Malbec 2008 (Mendoza, Argentina)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Saturated ruby. Blackberry, bitter chocolate and licorice pastille on the nose. Sweet and concentrated but youthfully bound-up, with a strong acid spine currently dominating. Finishes with good peppery length and a suggestion of crushed stone; this wine will need time to become more civilized." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan/Feb 2010)
Seven Hills Malbec 2007 (Walla Walla Valley, Washington)
Retail Price: $30.00
Artisan Wine Depot Price: $22.99
You Save $7.01

100% Malbec, hand-selected from Windrow, McClellan Estate and Minnick Vineyards, three hillside sites in the Walla Walla Valley appellation. Harvest conditions were ideal. Deep purple, magenta color with an assertive scent of passion fruit, blueberry pie and hints of floral and sweet spice. Medium weight, bright body with moderate tannin. Ripe blueberry and slightly drying finish. Barrel aged in fine Hungarian Oak to accentuate aromatics and compliment the silky mouth feel of the wine. I predict at least three to four years of enjoyable cellar life.

Chateau la Caminade Cahors Cuvee "La Commandery" [Malbec] 2006 (Southwest France)
Retail Price: $27.00
Artisan Wine Depot Price: $21.99
You Save $5.01

This estate has been around since well before the French Revolution, resting in the hands first of the clergy (who knew something about making fine wine!) and then, since 1895, in the hands of the family Resses. This particular wine, made from 97% cot and 3% malbec, undergoes the strictest of winemaking regimens. Leafs are thinned and yield is limited to a maximum 40 hectolitres/hectare. And grapes are 100% destalked and sorted fallowed by a long maceration and maturation in oak barrels of which 50% are new each year. This is one to decant, as it shows that telltale tannin that put Cahors on the map hundreds of years ago. However with air and/or cellar time, it offers a robust and rich impression that calls for hearty red meat and goes down miraculously easy! La Commandery is textbook Cahors, with nuances of deep plum damp earth, black currant, smoke and licorice notes on both the nose and palate. 14% abv.
