Tasting Notes

Rich aromas of seasoned oak meld effortlessly with ripe boysenberry and candied cassis. The entry of the wine is soft and delicate, but quickly evolves into a serious mid-palate replete with opulent and concentrated flavors of dark fruits. Black currant and kirsch provide background to lively raspberry and cherry notes that create a near endless finish.

94 Points - James Suckling:
"Very dark colored, almost black. Full body, with super fine and refined tannins with dark chocolate and dark cherry and anise. Black olives at the finish. Tight and closed with a hint of toasted oak. I would give this three to five years of bottle age." - (June 11th, 2014)

93 Points - Stephan Tanzer:
"Saturated dark, bright ruby. Highly perfumed scents of blackberry, violet and minerals convey a powerful impression of lift. Delivers a rare combination of thickness and lightness, with the wine's underlying minerality giving its black fruit flavors a penetrating quality. A real wave of fruit on the palate, finishing with extremely refined tannins and a note of oaky torrefaction. Another outstanding wine from the 2010 vintage."

91 Points - James Suckling:
"I like the dried strawberry and cherry aromas. Hints of walnuts too. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Funky and earthy style. Drink or hold." - (June 2nd, 2015)

Stephen Tanzer:

"(14.8% alcohol): Slightly reduced aromas of plum, currant, mocha and musky chocolatey oak. Shows good ripeness and intensity if a touch of rusticity to its dark fruit and smoke flavors. Nicely integrated acidity and ripe tannins give the wine good grip and extend the finish, with the mocha oak quality repeating.
Stephen Tanzer (January 2015)

Winery Notes:
This newly released bottling always delvers the goods for the money. This vintage is no exception. Winemaker Mike Januik was offered Malbec from Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills and couldn’t turn it down. An oak vanillan-laced nose wraps around ripe summer berries with a caress of baking spices. Reminiscent of the ingredients for a berry pie, boysenberries take the lead with the gorgeous frui Mother Nature offered in 2012. Well integrated tannins offer a lovely, plush texture in to the lingering, satisfying finish.

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"A new side project between longtime Shafer Vineyards partners Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, the Eighty Four wines are meant to showcase varieties outside of what they do at their day jobs. A leathery texture with juicy plum and blackberry make for a supple, enjoyable wine, laced in coconut and rocky earth. Drink now through 2020." - Virginie Boone (12/1/2015)

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"Full ruby-red color. Musky aromas of dark cherry, currant, menthol, rose petal and violet are complicated by strong soil tones. Voluptuous, deep and sweet but with terrific energy and verve to the seamless flavors of black raspberry, brown spices and chocolate. Wonderfully seamless, long wine with noble, slowly building tannins. As sexy as this beauty is today, I'd give it four years in the cellar to burn off some of its baby fat."

90 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
Good deep red-ruby. The nose combines a port-like black cherry note with scents of violet and bitter chocolate. Despite an initial suggestion of stewed black fruits, the very ripe palate is spicy, juicy and vibrant, showing very good density and concentration as well as a light touch. The most concentrated and structured of these single-vineyard Malbec bottlings, with the flavors of spicy red and black fruits carrying well on the back end. A terrific value. (Feb. 2015)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"There is a change in the Benmarco line since 2013 when viticulturalist Edgardo del Popolo arrived at the winery. The 2013 BenMarco Malbec is now sourced from vineyards in Vista Flores and Chacayes in the Valle de Uco The nose is really floral and fruit-driven (black fruit), a little spicy and displaying elegance and poise. The palate is vibrant and focused with pure fruit and silky, fine tannins to make it really drinkable. A great Malbec from Uco and very nicely priced. 125,000 bottles produced." - Luis Gutierrez (Aug 2015)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2011 Malbec Vineyard 1955 is from La Consulta, an old vineyard planted in 1955 that they bought in 2010. The soils are a mixture of sand and lime, and, as with all old vineyards, there is a field blend where Malbec is dominant. But there’s a myriad of other red grapes mixed in the vineyard that are all picked and vinified together. I had the chance to walk this magnificent vineyard, on the border of Altamira. The wine is dark-colored, with a pungent and intense nose of ripe cherries, baking spices and a lactic touch. The palate shows natural concentration and balance with round, sweet tannins, a sense of harmony and refreshing acidity, ending long and supple. Wait one more year and enjoy its slow evolution in bottle. Drink 2015-2022." - Luis Gutierrez (Apr 2014)
