About This Wine:Giancarlo Rocca named his winery "Ronchi" because it is located in the middle of one of the most famous crus of Barbaresco called "Ronchi," right next to Montestefano. Ronchi means hillsides; Rocca means rock. Those names work nicely together to describe the essence of this winery. Steep hillsides, ideally located, full of stones: an Eden for Nebbiolo grapes.
Rocca gives us unbelievable access to his cellar. We are able to make what is, in effect, a barrel selection wine from all his oldest vines and best barrels. Rocca is a modest man whose only goal is quiet greatness; through the quality of his wines make waves all on their own. We are delighted to be his partner in this endeavor.
* Rocca crafts a Barbaresco from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the famous “Ronchi” vineyard, which is traditionally fermented and elevated via two different methods. The vats are then blended for complexity and balance.
* The Ronchi Langhe Chardonnay grapes are grown next to Nebbiolo vineyards, often aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in barrique.
What Does It Taste Like?
Never before have we experienced a Barbaresco from this estate with such heady aromatics. Incense and sandalwood, warm leather-bound books, garam masala and firewood smoke—with hints of red fruits and rose petals as delicate soprano notes. This aromatic festival makes way for a very bold, concentrated yet perfectly balanced mouth of Nebbiolo fruit—blackberries and black cherries, endlessly supple and ripe. Depth, persistence, balance—it’s all here. Great material portends a great cellar life, but we bet you won’t be able to keep your hands off it today.
