Notes From The Winemaker:

Arietta’s evolution continues with the release of the "new" Arietta Quartet 2007. This wine, with a new price point and a new label inspired by next generation Arietta owner Libby Hatton, is an irresistible blend of Bordeaux varietals from Arietta’s portfolio of first-class blocks in Napa vineyards. The composition of the wine is 51% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Critic Robert Parker advocates the Arietta Quartet 2007: "The dense purple-hued 2007 Quartet possesses abundant notes of sweet cassis interwoven with acacia flowers and crushed rocks. Deep and medium to full-bodied with excellent texture, richness, and sweetness, it should drink beautifully for two decades or more."

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"51% merlot, 36% cabernet sauvignon, 8% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot; from David Abreu's Howell Mountain vineyard and Hudson Vineyard fruit) Good red-ruby color. Ripe, sweet aromas of currant, cherry, coffee and chocolate, with an enticing floral element. Broad and sweet in the mouth, with currant and chocolate flavors dominating. Conveys an impression of low acidity yet there's no shortage of energy here. Finishes with dusty, soft tannins that will not get in the way of enjoying this wine early. Aged in 100% new oak, but the percentage for subsequent vintages will be 75% to 80%, according to proprietor Fritz Hatton." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '10)

91-93 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Good deep red. Aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate and licorice. Sweet, lush and generous, with complex and enticing flavors of black raspberry, chocolate and roasted herbs. This is deeper than the 2006 and finishes with noble tannins and impressive lingering sweetness. Winemaker Erickson describes 2007 as "more classically ripe and balanced than 2006. It has all the elements, with big ripeness." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '09)

92-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"A blend of 45% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, the dense purple-hued 2007 Quartet possesses abundant notes of sweet cassis interwoven with acacia flowers and crushed rocks. Deep and medium to full-bodied with excellent texture, richness, and sweetness, it should drink beautifully for two decades or more.

Some of California’s more innovative wines emerge from proprietor Fritz Hatton, the well-known auctioneer who is also a classical pianist. Hatton has been expanding his portfolio with each new vintage, and it appears his blended cuvees turn out more interesting than the varietal wines. Usually a blend of 55-60% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot is the proprietary red wine from the H Block of the Hudson Vineyard. The most expensive offering in the portfolio, it is very Cheval Blanc-like." - Robert Parker (12/2008)

93 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2006 vintage):
"This captures the essence of Bordeaux complexity with Napa style, delivering a complex, compelling mix of spicy herb, dried currant, sage, mineral and tobacco in a full-bodied style and ending with firm, spicy, earthy tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2017. 500 cases made." –JL (3/31/2009)

91-93 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):
"Full ruby-red. Blueberry, violet and mint on the nose. Juicy, fresh and vibrant, with firm acidity and solid tannic backbone giving it very good flavor definition. Today, this is the least fleshy of these young 2006s, with the result that the tannins come across as more dusty. A bit oaky on the back end too. From David Abreu's vineyard on top of Howell mountain, plus some cabernet franc from Hudson vineyard." - Stephen Tanzer (May/June '08)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage):
"The Pichon Lalande/Palmer-like blend called Quartet (generally 40+% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30-35% Merlot, 15-24% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot) is an intriguing wine. The 2006 Quartet reveals a dark ruby color along with notes of crushed rocks, spring flowers, red and black fruits, medium to full body, and elevated, austere tannins. It should be forgotten for 3-4 years, and drunk over the following 15 years." - Robert Parker (12/2008)
