Notes from the Winemaker:

2009 was our sixth vintage of making Pinot Noir from the Graham Family Vineyard. As usual, it was another low-yielding year for the Graham Pinot, with only 2.2 tons per acre harvest. Ironically, this was the 2nd largest crop ever produced at Graham, coming in behind the prolific 2006 vintage. With the perfect weather conditions throughout the season, we started picking Graham in the third week in September and finished by the end of the month.

This was the first Graham Family Vineyard Pinot we’ve made at August West that consisted entirely of free run wine. This is the wine that comes from the fermentation vessel freely, before the pomace goes to the press. Free run wine is usually more concentrated with fruit than the press wine, so the resulting ’09 Graham is packed with ripe Russian River Valley berry fruit, and has more weight, color and tannin than previous vintages. Expect this 2009 Graham Family Vineyard Pinot Noir to drink well from late 2011 through 2017.

Barrel aging:  10 months in 40% new and 60% 1 and 2 year old French oak
Cases produced:  333

Ratings & Reviews

91+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2008 vintage):
"Full red. High-pitched red fruits, blood orange and minerals on the nose, with deeper black cardamom and cola notes arriving with air. Taut and sharply focused but concentrated as well, offering spicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a floral touch. Unwinds slowly and finishes with fine-grained tannins, youthful grip and impressive persistence. This is very promising but could use some air or bottle age." - Josh Raynolds (May/Jun '10)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2008 vintage):
"Sweet ripe fruit is supple, polished, complex and layered, with delicate black cherry and wild berry fruit that's pure and persistent. Drink now through 2016. 451 cases made." –JL (2010)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2007 vintage):
"Rich and full-bodied, intense and spicy, with blackberry and wild berry fruit at the core. Supple and focused, ending on a delicate berry jam note. Drink now through 2012. 310 cases made." –JL (6/15/2009)

90 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage):
"Light red color. Strikingly aromatic nose offers smoky cherry and dark berry scents complicated by musky herbs, baking spices and cola. Deeply concentrated, supple dark fruit flavors meld sweetness and vivacity seamlessly. Gains weight on the finish, which features cherry-cola and ripe blackberry qualities. A sexy, forward style that's delicious today" - Josh Raynolds ( (May/June '08)
