Notes from the Winemaker:

The 2007 Broadside Margarita Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the second release from Broadside. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced exclusively from the Margarita Vineyard. The Vines were planted in 1999.

The Margarita Vineyard is the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation. It is actually much closer to the town of San Luis Obispo than Paso Robles. The vineyard is also located closer to the Pacific Ocean than most other vineyards in the Paso Robles appellation. It’s just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean at an altitude of 1000 feet. This location results in perfect conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon with warm days and cool nights. The resulting wine has an abundant intensity of fruit, but still maintains balance and freshness. In addition, hillside plantings and calcareous soil summed with lots of fossilized sea shells give the wine a mineral thread uncommon to most red wines at this price point. The wine was produced and bottled by Broadside a few miles east of the vineyard in the town of Creston.

What Does It Taste Like?

AMAZING VALUE! Robust w/ abundant flavor intensity of vanilla, dark chocolate, currant & black fruit w/ a touch of mineral & spice. Delicious from start to finish.

Ratings / Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle's Top 100 Wines 2009 - Cabernet and Merlot:
"From limestone soils at the very southern edge of Paso Robles, this shows how Cabernet can still speak softly. Made by Chris Brockway of San Francisco's Broc Cellars with a native yeast fermentation and almost no new oak, it's full of fresh brambly berries, juniper and a pencil-lead bite atop dense tannins. An energetic single-vineyard Cabernet with no fat."

San Francisco Chronicle's WINE OF THE WEEK:

"This effort, from a cooler spot on limestone soils at the very southern edge of Paso Robles, is a reminder that Cabernet can still speak softly. A project from Chris Brockway of San Francisco's Broc Cellars, it gets a native yeast fermentation and sees almost no new oak. As such, it's a touch more raw, with fresh bramble, graphite and berry-leaf aromas, and a dense pile of tannins to bolster lively black fruit. Let it breathe. An energetic single-vineyard Cabernet with no fat on it that outperforms for its price." -Jon Bonne, Chronicle Wine Editor (July, 2009)

Wine & Spirits Magazine - 90 Points:

"2007 Paso Robles Margarita Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Buy) This feels remarkably cool for Paso Robles cabernet, a refreshing balance of cherry and bramble fruit that lasts through the finish. Match its chewy tannins with a pork roast."

Didn't notice anything special about this.  Reminded me a lot of Charles Shaw, at least on Chuck's good batches.
