History:
The Dubois-Challon-Vauthier family, who has owned Ch. Ausone since the 1600s, has over the past century dramatically increased their holdings. They have acquiring Ch. Moulin St. Georges (1921), Ch. Haut Simard (1920s) Ch. Simard (1954) and now Ch. La Clotte (2014), also bought the property which grows the grapes for Fonbel in 1971. Pauline Vauthier is the currently oversees the winemaking at these properties, but it is her father, Alain Vauthier who, though still active business, has been stepping back in recent years.

The vines are on average, close to 25 years of age which is the encourage average age of vines across Bordeaux where they want the vines to be both mature and productive. This means that older vines are often removed once their production is deemed to be diminishing. The Wine Doctor writes that grapes are vinified in stainless temperature controlled vats, though it is not clear where the wines are made, since there no longer seems to be a chateau on the land and there is no address listed for the property, but with severa; chateaux at their disposal, another production facility might seem overkill. Chateau Fonbel is aged in 30% new, French oak barrels for close to 10 months before bottling. The same team that makes Chateau Ausone also make Fonbel.

Ratings & Reviews
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2016 Château de Fonbel from the team at Ausone is a brilliant Saint-Emilion in 2016. Tons of black raspberry and cassis fruits, notes of spice, and dried flowers, medium body, and a balanced, elegant texture all make for beautiful wine. It has the purity of elegance of the vintage front and center, and while it’s already hard to resist, it’s got 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it." - Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019)

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Composed of 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Carménère, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Fonbel has a classic nose of warm red plums, cigar box and black plums with nuances of redcurrants, Sichuan pepper and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a lot of mid-palate fruit with lovely plush tannins and a long refreshing finish." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (30th Nov 2018)

91 Points - James Suckling:
"This has a spicy edge with black and red fruit, as well as a reductive edge, leading to a succulent and juicy array of bright raspberries and red cherries. Drink or hold." - (February 3, 2019)

91 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Rich autumnal hedgerow packed with ripe blackberry fruits and overlaid with a fresh, herbal, spicy edge that pulls the mid-palate inwards and allows it to expand on the finish. Expertly done and very enjoyable. 70% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Carmenere. From the Vauthier stable."

89 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
"The 2016 de Fonbel is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry and plum fruit is nicely pushed forward in this succulent, easygoing Saint-Émilion from the Vauthier family." - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2019)

Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Rich blackberry fruits join with attractive acidity and soft tannins to make an accessible wine with plenty of fruitiness and a bright aftertaste. Drink from 2021." - Roger Voss (5/1/2019)
