About this Wine:

Hand-picked grapes were crushed with 20% to 30% whole berries.

Cold soaking on the skins for two days extracted soft tannins and intense color.

After the seven-day primary fermentation, lots were pressed, blended and placed into new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.

The traditional Bordeaux winemaking protocol included barrel aging for 26 months with barrel-to-barrel racking at three month intervals. Barrels were topped weekly during the first six months, and egg white fining occurred after 18 months.

What Does It Taste Like?

“A classic Bordeaux-style winemaking protocol enhances the aromatics of slight spice, earth, cherry and blackberry in this bold red blend. Subtle oak notes are perfectly balanced with flavors of currant, cocoa and dark berries that lead to a long, lingering, seductive finish.” - Ray Einberger, Winemaker

Ratings & Reviews

92 Points - Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine:
"This very well crafted wine serves as a welcome reminder that depth and density are not antithetical to refinement and grace. From its rich, nicely layered aromas of cherries, cocoa and sweet oak to its impressively extracted flavors, it exhibits a good sense of proportion and never lets ripeness trump its well-defined fruit. It progresses effortlessly to a long, lightly tannic finish and is bound to age quite comfortably." (3/1/2010)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2006 Walter Clore Private Reserve is composed of 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 30 months in new French oak. It exhibits notes of pain grille, pencil lead, damp earth, herbs, and balsamic. This leads to a full-bodied, ripe, layered wine with excellent depth, concentration, and length. Give it 3-4 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2026.

Columbia Crest, part of the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, is Washington’s largest winery. It produces mammoth amounts of wine (2,000,000+ cases) at a remarkably high level of quality. A visit to the cellars reveals brilliant organization, high morale, and a sense of personal involvement by the staff that undoubtedly adds value to the finished wine." - Jay Miller (8/2010)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2005 vintage):
"Ripe and polished, with gorgeous chocolate-tinged black currant, black raspberry and coffee notes swirling through the long, vivid finish. Tempting now, but should develop more with cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2016. 6,500 cases made." –HS (2/28/2009)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Columbia Crest’s flagship is the 2005 Walter Clore Private Reserve, a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 26 months in new French oak. Purple-colored it exhibits an alluring bouquet of toast, coconut, chocolate, graphite, spice box, black currant, and black cherry. Medium to full-bodied, savory, and structured, this well-balanced effort will improve for another 3-5 years in the bottle and offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2025." - Jay Miller (10/2009)

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2005 vintage):
"The finest Walter Clore since the 2001, this Bordeaux-style blend shows considerable muscle and depth. Built upon firm, cherry-berry fruit, it adds nuances of baking spice, pepper, vanilla wafer and a pleasing earthiness to the tannins. It represents the ultimate expression of Columbia Crest, and the 2005 marks a welcome return to excellence." - P.G. (5/1/2009)
