Notes from the Winemaker:

This release of Doyenne Aix shows complex aromas of violets, fennel seed, wood smoke, blackberries, cassis, iron and white pepper. It is vintage full of flavor that includes diverse berry characteristics, vanilla, espresso and anise. The structure combines the solid core and focus of Cabernet Sauvignon, the rich open spicy fruit of Syrah and the savory, mouthwatering juicy acidity that the 2010 vintage is noted for. Expressing a rich, flavorful and savory nature make it the perfect wine for steaks and other grilled meats.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"(51% syrah, 43% cabernet sauvignon and 6% mourvedre): Bright red. Aromas of blackberry and licorice are complicated by spicy oak and white pepper. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, with lovely intensity to the youthfully tight red berry flavors. Finishes sweet and long, with firm but harmonious tannins. I'd give this at least a year in the cellar before pulling the cork." -Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec 13)

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Firm tannins surround a juicy core of blackberry, tobacco, tomato leaf and wet stone flavors. A complex and formidable red that needs cellaring to soften the tough texture. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre. Best from 2015 through 2020. 2,000 cases made." -HS (June 15, 2013)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2009 vintage):
"A blend of 58% Syrah, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Mourvèdre, this combinins power with a big yum factor. Potent and rich, with woody, spicy highlights, the juicy fruit flavors favor blackberry and black cherry. A whiff of smoke runs through the finish." -Paul Gregutt (12/31/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2009 vintage):
"The 2009 Doyenne Aix – 58% Syrah; 38% Cabernet Sauvignon; and 4% Mourvedre, originating in the Ciel du Cheval, Grand Ciel, and Boushey vineyards – represents the seventh in a series inaugurated as the cuvee that winemaker Chris Upchurch blended to serve at his own wedding reception. Ripe blackberry and cassis mingle with beet root, dark chocolate, and peat for a pungent, bittersweet, and satisfyingly earthy, faintly grainy palate display. A tart berry skin tang and bite of black pepper add to the stimulation of a sweetly-ripe finish that I would love to see be a bit juicier and more sustained. A year in bottle might well witness a yet more harmonious and expressive performance, and I would by no means rule out following this for several additional years." -David Schildknecht (Dec 2012)
