Notes from the Winemaker:

This wine is a unique expression of the excellence of the lieu-dit « Saint-Joseph » appellation and these vineyards are from amongst the very best of this up-and-coming appellation in the northern Côtes-du-Rhône. These very slopes lent their name to the Saint-Joseph appellation when it was created. The label was designed by Roger PFUND, a Franco-Swiss artist who is a specialist in the design of bank notes.

Tasting:
Eye : Deep red
Nose : Complex with dominant black fruit and delicate oak aromas. A pure and intense nose.
Palate : A powerful attack. Round and elegant tannins.
Overall : A veritable success. Fresh and powerful. Will become more refined with age.

Technical Data:
Soil type: Steep sloped vineyards. Gneiss with granite streaks
Grape variety: 100 % Syrah.
Average age of vines: 20 to 75 years
Winemaking: Temperature controlled alcoholic fermentation up to 33°C.
Ageing: 50% new oak barrels. 50% barrels of one wine.

Ratings & Reviews
93 Points - Stephen Tanzer:
"Bright violet. Dark berry preserves, potpourri, peppery spices and olive on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy, penetrating and sweet, offering densely packed blackberry and cherry compote flavors and a smoky mineral nuance that builds with air. Supple tannins give shape to the impressively persistent, mineral-laced finish, which strongly repeats the dark berry note." - Josh Raynolds (December 2015)

91-93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Showing similar to last year and still resting in barrel, the 2013 St Joseph Lieu Dit St Joseph is a classic, old school-styled beauty that offers notes of charcoal, crushed rock, pepper, and both blackberry and cassis-like fruit. Possessing bright acidity, plenty of tannin, solid mid-palate concentration and plenty of oak, it will need 3-4 years of cellaring but have 15 or more years of overall longevity." - Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2015)

Classy Pepper Rhone February 25, 2019
Reviewer: Barbara Rooks from San Francisco, CA United States
This was tasted blind against 3 other Syrahs and was the most clearly peppery of the lot, with wonderful gamy and red plum notes. It was much higher acidity than our other blind contestants, clearly an Old World wine. Still young, this was a real treat with our oxtail ragu and chocolate pot au creme dessert!
