Notes from the Winemaker

Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards.  His reputation for producing world-class Cabernet spans more than four decades.  After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim.

An expressive wine of elegance offering layers of black cherry, dried currant and spice laced with nuances of licorice and dark chocolate for added complexity. Dark fruit and refined tannins provide wonderful texture and a lingering finish.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The 2007 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) is produced by Randy Dunn. It is a multi-regional blend of Cabernet with the Dionysus and Weinbau Vineyards as the principal sources. It was aged for 22 months in 90% new French oak. Deep purple-colored, it exhibits a classy bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, earth notes, violets, and black currant. Supple and layered on the palate, it displays enough underlying structure to evolve for 5-6 years. With outstanding volume and grip, it will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2027." - Jay Miller (Aug 2010)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Pure Cabernet, aged in the same Vicard barrels as winemaker Randy Dunn’s Howell Mountain wines. About 90% is new oak, but it doesn’t strangle the fruit in any way. Tart and vibrant, with black cherry/black currant fruit, this balanced effort shows a velvety character and a fine touch in the vineyard. Nuances of coffee, earth, leaf and dried herb are threaded through, in perfect harmony and balanced for medium-term aging." — P.G. (12/31/2010)

92+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar:
"Good dark red. Aromas of cassis, licorice and pepper, lifted by a floral topnote. Fat, ripe and silky, especially for a wine made under the direction of Randy Dunn, but showing little in the way of easy sweetness. Strong currant and black cherry fruit are given grip by substantial tannins, which arrive late. Ultimately powerful and backward but not hard. This includes a lot of Weinbau vineyard fruit, which supplies structure." - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec '10)

92 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Firm, chewy and distinctive for its smoky dried tomato accents around a core of blackberry, black cherry and bay leaf flavors, lingering expressively on the deftly balanced finish. Best from 2012 through 2017. 1,991 cases made." –HS (Oct 15, 2010)

93 Points -
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2006 vintage)
"The 2006 Feather is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee made by Randy Dunn of Napa Valley fame. The wine was sourced from several prime vineyards and aged for 22 months in new French oak. The nose gives up aromas of toasty oak, scorched earth, Asian spices, black currant, and blackberry. Firm and structured yet elegant on the palate, there are layers of fruit and enough tannin to evolve for another 4-6 years. The wine will be at its best from 2013 to 2026." - Jay Miller (Oct 2009)

91+ Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (2006 vintage)
"($60; this is Randy Dunn's project, made entirely from cabernet sauvignon) Good deep ruby-red. Sexy if subdued aromas of cherry, currant, smoked meat and vanillin oak. Broad, full and quite dry, with a weightless quality to the blueberry and spicy oak flavors. Sound acids gives this wine excellent cut and perfumed back-end lift. According to resident winemaker Gilles Nicault, Dunn and John Duval are the two partners in the Long Shadows venture who tend to harvest their fruit on the early side, Dunn to make a wine with lowish alcohol and Duval to preserve the freshness of his syrah. " - Stephen Tanzer (Nov/Dec '09)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine (2006 vintage)
"Smooth and round, with a roasted red pepper note weaving through the ripe currant, plum and spice flavors, lingering easily against polished tannins. Drink now through 2013. 2,238 cases made." –HS (Feb 28, 2010)
